personly if im crating a infantry squad, I will just use alpha, bravo or any other default name as if you name it defence etc it really defies the point as I like to run a very flexible squad that can change its role very quickly to adapt to the battle.

YES!
Pr and (rarely) bf2 are the only games where you can get good teamwork in a pub
dice should definately be given props for the squad system

4. Close Air Support/ Forward Air Control - A-10's, BOmber's and Fighter's

A-10's should each be in a seperate squad, so the commander can communicate seperately with each, and designate seperate orders to each.

In summary, naming your squad appropriately will benefit your team, and increase the overall cohesion of your team.

I am sick and tired of being in a Cobra squad, and having two fools from Alpha or Armor squad jump in a Cobra and take off.
I would think it accpetable to have a one man squad named 1A-10 and to have this pilot be directed indevidualy by the commander, aswell as a one man squad called 2A-10, for the other A-10 Pilot.

Cobras work better in 4 man teams named Cobra, AH1z, Atk Heli. They can also be directed by the commander and should work as a pair of choppers.

Squad leaders can be efficent on the ground as well as in the air. A kit which provides some kind of optics will provide the SL to give an accurate and 'down-to-earth' assessment of the battlefield and place attack markers himself. A sniper kit is NOT NESSECITY, the more easily available officer kit supplies SOFLAM designators for exactly this job.

You make some excellent points Garabaldi.

I totaly agree on the use of appropriate squad names to designate the use of specfic vehicles.

However i do think people must learn first or at least learn, how to use vehicles with infantry becuase with out a high level of co-operationg both are at a significant loss, often enough to take serious losses.

Quick note of infantry-vehicular co-operation in direct relation to squad layout:

- APCs: should operate with in 6 man infantry squads becuase direct fire support can be places, in-conjuction with infantry assults, backed up by 3 close by spwn points. This makes for an extremely formidable force however, due the max no. of infantry on the ground being 4, this squad should be supported by another squad.

- Main Battle Tanks: After serious consideration and practise in the field, i have found the type of squad depends on the map.

Where the chance of tank VS tank combat is a possibilty (both teams have tanks of a high standing) - a seperate squad should be created for each indervidual tank (2 crew men, 4 infantry - SL infantry). Reason: allows for best level of communication between crew members, a must for tank on tank combat.

Where the chance of tank Vs tank combat is NOT a possibility - tanks should operate in a mixed infantry squad (3 crew men, 3 infantry - SL infantry). Reason: Infantry are a serious threat to tanks, friendly infantry are the only way of dealing with this threat properly, therefore good communication between tanks and infantry is required and this squad layout is the best and only way.

Aircraft also have a variety of different squad layouts. As Garabaldi clearly mentioned, seperate squads for planes, helos (attack and transport) are a must.

However, many players like the idea of an insquad transport helo pilot or attack aircraft. This is helpfull for the squad but deteramental for the entire team and extremely selfish when considering other squads similar need for airsupport of any and all kinds.

SO I ALSO ASK ALL MAINLY INFANTRY OR ARMOUR SQUADS WITH PILOTS IN THEM, TO ASK THE PILOT TO LEAVE AND CREATE A ***(aircraft name)*** SQUAD AND LOCK IT.

p.s TC must admit though to calling his infantry only squads: "voipalot", "happyvoip", "illvoip", "unesgnbums", "tohellnbck", "nomutes", "fireteams", "sober...".

It would be nice if you could change the name of your squad while playing. I doubt this is possible though.

Great post. This should be a Standard Operating Procedure on ALL PR servers. I know on my server we try to enforce the use of named specialty squads as much as possible for the exact reasons you described.

Agreed. I've played so many other tactical shooters where on pubs everyone is just running an "iron sight rambo" drill, or even if there are squads, everyone gets broken up and ignores squad divisions. PR/BF2's squad system isn't entirely foolproof, but it helps teamwork along much more than other games.

Without a doubt, a major contributor to its' success is the arrows and indicators which point out your squad mates and objectives. I've heard too many realism fanatics expound the "there's no glowing magic arrows in real life" mentality...which is stupid, because in real life there's no under-age civilians spontaneously jumping into combat from the seat of their desk-chairs with no training in combat tactics or teamwork...often without the ability to even speak to others (ie no mic).

I can see why clans might prefer to opt for the authenticity of minimal HUD indicators and what not, since they've already trained to work together they don't need that stuff. But on public servers or any other form of casual play, these type of indicators are totally necessary.

Another note is that just adding 'VOIP|' or [V] prefix on pubs makes life a whole lot easier for you and other people that play properly

I swear if i ever saw a squad called VOIP|Recon I'd probably squeal with glee

As commander or A10 pilot, I was just going to add that Cobras are fine when both on the same squad. However, as pilot/commander, I prefer that the A10 pilots be in separate squads. The airspace gets too tight when the Commander sends in ALL AIR to one target. Its hard enough dodging AA, let alone another A10 and 2 Cobras :)

is the number of members in a squad hard coded as well? or is there any way to allow all SL (COs) to talk to eachother? say you had a convoy of two tanks, two apcs and two hmmwvs, someone is going to be out of the loop, you want the tank commander to speak with the gunners and drivers, but you also want each armor piece to be able to speak with eachother, I've been reading thunder run and it seems more and more important to me that each member of a convoy has contact with eachother.. think 3 soldiers / tank, 2 soldiers / apc, 2 soldiers / hmmwv plus any other riding along.. with the important drivers / gunners and tank commanders possibly being around 14! is it at all possible to change number of members / squad? or is it 'hard coded' like so many other things?

I'll usually start up a "Recon" squad whenever I'm on to sneak around, take out assets and generally be a thorn in the enemies side while the bulk of the team roll up the flags. On Al Bas it's drop the bridges, drop the AAA and the spawn cars etc. Works fairly well.

You will see by joining my squad if you ever have that it is called Spec Ops, but I only run Spec Ops style warfare after 50% of the time. I simply keep the name because people know it and if they enjoyed playing with me before they will sometimes join. So therefore, I can sometimes get a full squad of good players right after entering the game.

Excellent thread.

SLs, when a person joins your squad and reports in, like they even do that, explain what your squad is doing and what vehicles they are allowed. For good measure assign them to a fire-team.

This sounds great and all but what ends up happening is that you end up with like 4 air squads each with like 2 guys all waiting for one jet. ~_~
