First I want to say I have a mid level system, not the best, not the worst. So I will feel the effects of these changes.

What I think would help is during the testing stage have servers running this with at least a moderate amount of people on them and try out different increases. I can only assume that the testers have a varied collection of PC's. Have the testers report back on how it affected their system what settings they needed to change to compensate etc. Hopefully at the end of all this you can set a limit where someone with a low end PC can still play. Sure they will have to run on low settings but can still enjoy the essence of PR.

At this point most of us can only speculate as to how much of an impact this is going to have. I look forward to the increase but I don't look forward to convincing my wife why I need a 8800GTS

------------------------------------------------------

Current system Specs:
AMD 3700 @ 255 = 2.8Ghz
2Gb OCZ ram @ 240Mhz
7800GTX @ 575mhz
Viewsonic 20.1" 1600x1050 (this resolution forces me to lower the settings)
Not bad but not high end by a long shot.

You guys would be surprised how big a hit I took with the new LCD monitor. I had a 19" CRT and could run everything on High with AF and AA. I switched to the LCD and had to drop some settings to Med and reduce the AF and AA some (cant lower the resolution without the game looking really bad). Now I don't want you guys to feel bad for me, thats not my point ;-) To me I consider a setup similar to mine but with a 8800 series or 1950XT card plus a faster CPU to be high end.

Note: I had to scrimp and save for this thing. E-bay was my friend, scrounged parts from my old computer etc. I built it myself for far less then from a retailer. Im not made of money thats for sure

Tsk tsk tsk. No computer is high end IMO unless it can run the Crytek 2 engine with DirectX 10 @ 60fps all options and effects at MAX settings.

Watch this and then you'll see what high-end is all about.

The BF2 engine is old and very low-end relatively speaking. It just goes to prove how dedicated the Devs are to have made Project Reality the mod that it is. So the more they push it the better. Don't forget that BF2 was designed to run well on midrange 2005 hardware. Check the date... We just passed April 2007.

My PC is low end in my opinion.
  • Athlon 3500 AM2
  • 2GB 667Mhz DDR2
  • 80GB + 250GB SATA2 HDD's
  • GeForce 7600GS (had a GF7950 512MB but I'm RMA'ing it as something is screwed)
When I have the opportunity, I'll upgrade the CPU to a Athlon 5000+ and hopefully swap the GF7950 for a 8800GTS. Then it will be mid-range.

High end folks, is a Quad-Core CPU, 4-8GB of RAM and 2x 8800GTX in SLI mode and 3x SATA2 HDDs running RAID-5. Thats high end.

Right now most people can't afford truly "high-end" systems. There are those who can. Lucky ******** :-(

What I'm trying to get at here is that PC hardware evolves rapidly. Its a harsh tough (and expensive) fact. If you're still running a Geforce FX, then you're running a game engine (BF2) that was designed for Geforce 6's in mind.

I'm not trying to put down those with yesteryears hardware, but facts are facts. The objective here was to clearly define low-end, mid-range and high end WTR to 2007. Not getting into the argument of what specs should be required for PR. Thats politics ;-)

If we are going to be increasing view distances will we be fixing the optics as well? currently the zoom power in the scopes and binoculars is woefully underpowered, I think the 4x scope actually provides 2x zoom at best.
