To elaborate on el_vikingo's response, you have to right click on your PR shortcut and select properties. Next, in the compatability options tab you have to tick the box for running the program as an administrator. Then, when you try to launch the game you will get a warning saying something like "this program is trying to get admin rights on your computer". Just click allow and you should be up and running!
Incidentally, if you right click on the BF2 entry in the games explorer and select properties, you can add PR as an extra launch option for BF2 so that you can launch it right out of the games explorer.

Hate to be boring, but I run Vista Ultimate on a E6600, 4GB Ram (Dominator 1167), 8800GTXSLI, etc. Only problems Ive had is the X-FI has tons of features it cant actually use (namely 5.1!).
Granted it did get me 3 weeks to get it delievered and 2 days to even put the thing together (I had to take out the HD cage to get the graphics cards to fit.. warning for 8800s)
so Im owed some computer luck
Plus, there isnt going to be any service packs for Vista so its kinda hard to pick a date/time to "upgrade". That said, wait until September is my advice. (Aka UT07, Crysis, etc)
EDIT: I live in the same city as Thunder...Im coming for you!!

It works on Vista but you should do what I did and install an XP partition to play games. Vista has not fully supported games yet. They're still working with nVidia and ATi to provide DirectX10 cards and coding support.
If you want to play a game in Vista now, you'd have to run in administrator mode and select Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.

Bits 'n Bytes
A 64-bit OS is simply a bad choice for everything unless you have more than 2GB of RAM. Windows 32-bit can address up to 4GB of RAM *theoretically*. It will work with 4GB but will only provide 2GB to each process at most. Thats more than enough for BF2 with everything on high. And if its not enough you can increase it to 3GB.
When memory consumption approaches the 2GB limit, the paging process increases and performance begins to degrade. In order to improve performance and memory utilization, Windows memory managers use a concept known as PAE (Physical Addressing Extension) on Intel chips, which basically reduces the need to swap the memory of the paging file. The client program is not aware of the actual memory size. Rather, all the management and allocation of the memory addressed by PAE is handled independently of the program accessing the memory. In order to enable extended memory support and utilize PAE, the /3GB switch must be enabled in the boot.ini file...

BF2 works ok on Windows 2003 64-bit R2 SP2 which is what I run on 2GB of RAM. One major downside of a 64-bit OS is that the processes use more RAM... Way more RAM. My 2GB turns into something like 1.25 - 1.5GB effective. So don't use a 64-bit OS unless you have a good reason.
Also, Vista runs far more stuff in the background - I would predict a noticeable FPS drop, but it depends on the setup.
Damn, it seems like only yesterday when I was so proud of my BBC Micro B with 128KB of DRAM vs most people with only 64. Ah, those were the days.
