The Mi-28 is equipped with a turreted 30 mm cannon, the 2A42. The gun mount is stabilised in two planes. A firing unit is installed between two faired cartridge housings mounted directly on the gun carriage. The gun is fed selectively from the cartridge housings. The firing calculator device provides high firing precision at all angles of rotation of the gun. The weight of one round of ammunition is 1,000 grams. The cannon provides a muzzle velocity of 1,000 metres per second.

Yes, the BMP-2 and the Mi-28 do use the same cannon, the 2A42 (as does the BTR-90). Other Russian aircraft (including MiG-29 and Su-27) use GsH-30 series cannons that fire the same family of 30 x 164mm ammunition. 2S6M Tunguska uses this ammunition, too. Hooray for standardization!Tacamo wrote:Doesn't the Mi-28 have dual ammo magazines containing two ammo types? Unless I'm getting it mixed up with the BMP-2's cannon, but I think they're pretty much the same.
(Just for comparison purposes, the cartridge fired by the GAU-8 Avenger cannon is 30 x 173mm)

Sorry to revive this topic but meh. It'd be nice if you could select the attack mode of the AT missiles. Direct fire and Indirect fire. Direct being a regular flat trajectory guided flight, and indirect being top town attack, great for attacking tank (which is it's purpose).
Oh and the Mi-28 cannon can fire 30mm HE and AP rounds. Also I'm a big fan of the 23mm gunpods they sometimes carry. Amazing devistation. Massive rate of fire, great at straifing infantry or light-medium armour.

thats what MadMax is suggesting Tacamo, LOBL and LOAL (though I doubt we would be able to implement it exactly as in life...) Lock On Before Launch (direct fire) and Lock On After Launch (fire, pop up and lock target, hit, pop down again... ingame terms just a higher trajectory for the missile) would be handy for firing and avoiding obsticals
also, regarding the AA missiles, not necesarily just two, depends on the missile, could be the Sidewinder in which case due to its size, yeh two only, but if it were the Stingers, then four (2 per side)[/thread hijack]

Doesn't seem impossible, LOAL would fire the missles as a ballistic object in a high arc, when they reach the top of the arc they would then "fire" as if they just launched from the helicopter (as in they are now being guided to a target.) The helicopter would have to have a missle lock when the misle reached the arc otherwise it would go dumb.
I'm not sure if I'm describing it clearly but basicly this: Use the exact same code as a laser guided missle on the bomber planes, only the missle is fired in two stages, first shoots it up in the air, then code it like the missle is fired from an invisible launcher in the air, using the helo's targeting info at the time of launch.
Interesting would be if it was possible in the event the firing Helo had no lock the missle could use the next available lock, this could allow a Attack chopper to to fire on targets lit up by a kiowa's radar, as I believe is done IRL if "Longbow 2" was accurate. Also I'm not sure if its realistic but it would allow soldier to laser designate targets which the chopper cold fire on from behind cover (AA emplacements come to mind)
An idea if possible, the missle would look for target locks in this order
Self>Squad>Team, and if using someone else's lock it would treat the original firer as an assist. That way if they get a kill they get points, but if somoeone points a laser at a friendly the chopper firing the missle wouldn't get a tk
Also, this would call for a new multiple chopper varients, for both wire guided and laser/radar guided missles

Check out some of the changes the guys at Nations-At-War have done, they have added Air to Air missiles to all the attack choppers. It is definately possible and I would imagine not so difficult as to be of putting. It's one of the major problems in Vanilla BF2, attack helos should have at least some limited type of defence against other airborne combatants. The chances of taking down a fighter jet are still relatively low, however it does add another dimension to chopper combat. Whether this is realistic or not, I have no idea, I fly choppers I don't design them.
