joysticks are for nerds. i cant have one ells people will see it and wonder what i do in my free time.

the choppers right now are completely ridiculous and go out of control fast and turn on a dime. joystick or not, there just ridiculous as is.

I use a joy stick (x52).
and I have personally have yet to see a better pilot then me.

I used keys and I found that its harder for me to control

the choppers are great right now, real easy to control once you get the hang of it.

military pilots don't start their training with gunfire raining in on them either...

There is a very useful 'flight training' map that a member here created, it has a ton of helicopters from all factions (and jets) and lots of space to fly around and practice, including some urban settings to practice maneuvering near buildings.

Do a forum search for it and you should find it easily. Learning the basics of flying, ie: being able to handle the aircraft confidently and without any problems while in a non combat situation - is the first step to being able to handle the aircraft under pressure and with everyone and their mother shooting at you.

I have the exact same one, are you getting the turns inverted?
i.e.
pull up = nose up (correct)
twist right = turn left (wrong)

I also have the same one and no, I don't have those problems. You must be setting it up wrong

I have a decent joystick with a throttle and I have tried the mouse and keyboard and the keyboard on its own. I have found that I can crash equally with all of them I have tried training by creating a local server and usually have to wait to request another pilot kit I die so quickly

I don't think flying is easy in PR, I really appreciate a good chopper pilot when I'm playing. I don't know how you guys find it so "easy" I have pretty much given up on learning to fly anything in PR. Don't change the choppers etc. if they currently work well and are realistic. The only thing with the throttle for keyboard users would be an incremental throttle where if you hold the key down to acheive 80% throttle and then let go it stays there. Im not a fan of the current, tap..tap...tap,tap....to much.......tap throttle control with the keyboard (I have several hours in choppers as a navigator and never once saw the pilot tap with the throttle ). But again I suck so pretty much ignore most of this comment

I have no problem to control the throttle with my joystick.

I've got one aswell, but I've always been wondering waht that button at the top you can, turn is for?

Another thing, where did that control go where you turn the beast with the tailrotor, ie A,D keys (dont remember waht its called, pitch? probably not)

Most PC joysticks that don't come with separate pedals can be twisted left and right to simulate using rudder or anti-torque pedals.

When you're going fast the rudder's won't work aswell. You need to bank instead.

everytime i started one in sp i got a top speed from 520 km/h with the little bird and crashed into the next building while im out of control.

Yes, taking all the time you need to succed in operating copters is the key to learn (everything in fact). So at the beginning you take minutes to land, but with practice it becomes more and more natural...

Another key is to start with the lightest copters, weight increasing the difficulty because of reducing the handiness.

Forget fighting copters when you learn. I started on BFVietnam taking bots from a point and dropping them to another point. Then I had to learn how to land quickly because of personnal rockets fusing so fast. So low flying altitude and quick landing were necessary. But before fulfill that you have to train basic movements.

When you fly the first time, it is easy to take altitude, low your nose to get speed, incline the copter to turn, but all becomes complicated when you attend to lose speed and hover a position !

So begin simple, get a few meters altitude, and land ! And restart that again and again. So you'll train to stabilize your flight and manage your vertical speed.

Then, at a few meters, try to do the basic movements, like rotating to look around during hovering, go forward then hover, move on your side then hover, go backward (really slow) then hover. The most you'll be trained too hover the most you'll improve your piloting skills !

Next training consists in choising a destination on the map (clear and released), and land there without a hurt, still taking all the time you need. Then imagine your passengers go and return to your base to land and load new soldiers. Return to the same point and land again.

Once you'll be accustomed to this operations, completing them quick, go for visit the map, the streets, turn around the buildings, land on the market to get a coffee and the bread for lunch, land on the roof of the mosquee to load the man appointed with the prayer and get him back home, then pick the sniper of the base to get him on another roof, locate the anti-aircraft turrests, flags, safe landing and strategical locations and so much...

Then you can search the web about real civil copters licence tests. You'll find more exercices helping you improving your skills...

After all of that, if you still like flying copters and didn't loosed patience, you'll be able to use all of your new skills under ennemy fire. Then the difficulty will be to operate all the operations you learned with the stress of flying over a battlefield and the calm with wich you succeded during training ! That's the next big job.

After reading this you understund why it is so difficult to succeed everything in one time, during the game in addition !

When you'll be at least an experienced pilot of transport, you'll be able to learn with combat helicopters.

Begin training with hovering in front of your target, then shoot it. The most you'll become precise, the most you'll try to move when firing.

After time you'll learn to rotate around a target to reduce the loss of altitude when pointing the ground. Also you'll try to get fast and the target and destroy it immediatly.

More than for transport it is important always to be in movements to increase the difficulty of heating you.

Search for a sniper and he will give you some bullets. I experienced that one time a found just in time a medic on the aircraft carrier

All of this is my experience. I learned by myself and only time and patience gets some results. Piloting a copter is mostly a question of coolness. So take your time, take pleasure and all will go by all alone

I would only use a joystick if there were Feedback on it. BF2 doesn't support feedback therefore I think it's absurd to use a joystick.
That, and hte fact that 99.9% of joystick users crash their choppers.


With a mouse I can last a whole round without crashing.

flying with a flightstick makes flying about 1000% easier (and a lot more fun). dont believe the negative hype, people. flightsticks are the way to go! just set your throttle and brake to buttons on your flightstick and you're good to go. i have found that trying to use the throttle slider is horrible waste of time making flying more difficult than it needs to be. using flightstick buttons for throttle and brake makes things very intuitive.
