"My China can kick your China's ***".

Just for the record, no I will not allow mods to use this model. Its being put to use in my own mod, and no its not for bf2. I just wanted to show you what "your china" should have. Or at least the ZTZ-96...

Just so you dev's know, bf2's "Type-98" aka "ZTZ-98" is a prototype tank that was never fielded by the PLA. The ZTZ-98 is what gave birth to this tank, the ZTZ-99/ZTZ-98G. Have fun drooling, or at least I hope you are. BTW its a WIP.

So the point of this was? Considering how we know our devs can do a lot better. Does look nice though.

It's strange that modding has not gone open source while many freely coded applications are.

Someone should make a website to hold models, code and textures and allow everyone who wants to use them. Everyone would win.

I'm sorry If my joking ways offended anyone. I merely wanted feedback since I haven't gone public public with the mod; and I respect your team so much I decided to post. Seeing as you guys didn't have or from the looks of it plan on adding a new Chinese tank 96, 96g, 98g/99 or otherwise I thought I'd post here. The topics label was just a joke. And so are the comments posted. This tank IRL can kick the tanks *** that your using as its inferior and also a prototype. I don't see why you would model a British challenger first when you stress reality when the mbt that your using for china isn't even used. And if you can so do better, which I don't doubt please by all means do; I like PR and really hate the fact you and ea are using a tank that China doesn't use. I was originally going to offer my model to you guys but as I gradually went over the bf2 limits I just said no. I'm near 10k tris right now before optimization. I'm aiming to build on either Quake Wars engine or CryEngine2. I had heard that you guys where eyeballing QW's and was even going to offer a mutual agreement of some kind; but I see that its prob not a good idea I suppose after some of the comments received, but I suppose I deserved them. Anyways, again, I'm sorry if anyone was offended. Cheers.

Well, that's EA/DICE's model and lousy research, not ours, like a lot of things. Since it is what we've got and we're modeling an entirely new faction, it'll have to do for now. :)

The cold receptions you got were not from members of the development team, so contact one of us by private message if you want to ask about a mutual resources agreement for future engine development.

Were you able to find good reference photos? Keep up the good work!!! :)

Model looks lovely :)

I agree the Type 98 is an annoying error, but we have a lot of stuff to focus on. We tend to focus on stuff that impacts game play over aesthetics issues. The limitations in the fidelity of the BF2 engine and the time we have to work around those make things like the Type 98 versus Type 99 issue primarily an aesthetic one.

We continue to add more fidelity and realism into the BF franchise than I've seen anyone attempt in the past, so hopefully we can model the characteristics of the MBTs that make them unique in a meaningful way. Eventually we'll get to the Type 99. When we do I hope our model looks as nice as yours :)

I think it's called having priorities. British didn't have an mbt yet, china did. So why make a new china one first? Having a new model for the chinese won't make a huge difference to the game, but giving an mbt to the brits will.

edit: damn, egg was faster :p

Going off-topic here, sorries.
If you mean free for all use, including commercial usage, then everyone except the artist would win. He would never get any payment for the work he made. However the game company could just copy some models from the site and make money.
Free for non-commercial use is also quite problematic. Art thefts in 3d world are already common and publishing source files doesn't really help. People copy eachothers work and put them on their own demo reels claiming its theirs.

Its more like lose/lose situation for artist to give models for free.

Back on-topic.
The tank looks great
Are you planning to make high poly model for normal maps or use Photoshop filter? You got nice&smooth profile for normal maps. ;)

Yes I plan to have some nice normals on it. A good normal and a good texture can do wonders for a model. My tank will look something like 1,000 times better with the two of them. I would/can add more actual detail model wise but I'm already pushing it tri/poly wise. I'm still not done and I posted here for feedback. However some of you prob have never even seen this tank :D . if you are gonig to make a mod with this baby plz add this feature
The Type 99 MBT utilises a unique optic-electronic countermeasures suite, which is located on the turret roof behind the gunner hatch. The system comprises a laser warning receiver (LWR) and an box-shape active laser self-defence weapon (LSDW), which was designed to use high-powered laser to attack the enemy weapon's optics and gunner. Once the LWR detects that the tank is being illuminated by an enemy range-finding or weapon-guidance laser, the system warns the tank crew and the LSDW is employed against the source of the enemy laser. The LSDW can disrupt the laser/infrared guidance signal of the enemy missile, disable the enemy observation optics (optical, night vision, thermal imager, laser rangefinder, etc.), and damage the eyesight of the enemy gunner. Photos of the Type 99 showed that the LSDW can be elevated to a higher angle than the tank's main gun, indicating that the engagement of attack helicopters is possible.

I dont think 10k polys is too much for BF2 as long as you have good LoDs.

Yes I know about the laser system. However its not possible in bf2. Quake Wars and also Crysis is another matter. Bf2 is a dieing game, and its engine is useless; hence I wont be building on it.

By the way, the laser system is the big boxy thing behind the gunner position [left side position]. You can clearly see it in my renders.
