it was rebooting due the excesive temperature, but now its a charm again

remember people to clean not only the software, CLEAN THE HARDWARE TOO!!

now, i have 1gb of ram 6600 gfx (non gt) with p4 ht and runs at 80-75 fps

This happens to me once a year or so if I don't open the box and clean it out.

A little Spring cleaning goes a long way
Clean it very 4 months at minimum.
Keep the CPU off the floor.
Be careful with the air sprays as they may contain moisture RTFL - Air compressors may blow some oil.
If your vacuum has a blow mode then change the bag first, or remove altogether - don't forget to put back in after ;) and go to it.
Before closing the case.
Press all power connectors, cards and RAM firmly into their slots.
Don't close up yet - Plug the power in and check that all the fans are spinning and as much as you may be tempted keep your fingers out of them :)
Close the case and ensure that none of the internal cables come into contact with the fans and try to keep them from blocking airflow.
If it's a tower case and you had it on it's side to clean out so make sure you lift it an put back on/beside/under the table carefully and hook it all back up. I say carefully because some cases can flex while moving them around and the cards loosen or come up at the end - hence that nasty clamp some AGP slots have on them. Unseated cards can cause very odd behavior.
Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for anything that may happen when you open Pandora's box - including insect/mouse bites (having found both inside server cases in the past).

One thing to add to Guardians excellent post, after blowing out all the dust make sure to let everything settle before you fire the computer up again. I know you are trying to get all the dust out but you will still have a bit kicking around which can get sucked into the hardrives or fan bearings etc. Oh and make sure to always properly ground yourself frequently when touching anything in there (just touch the case frame). Oh and I use tweezers and Q-tips when cleaning to get off the dust that is hard to remove or gets stuck in certain areas. This sounds a little obsesive but its worth it.

Ok so that was more then one thing, sorry

I use the combination vacuum/blower method. I hold the vacuum cleaner knozzle in one hand and use the air canister blower in the other. That way I can blow the dust directly towards the vacuum and it doesn't get stuck on other parts of the machine. You can clean up really fast that way.

PS - it's nearly impossible to keep your fingers out of the fans. Try as you may, you just have to stick a finger in one....

Vacuums produce static electricity. You should not operate a vacuum near a PC. They tend to hold a strong static charge from all the rubbing on the carpet and sucking, and the suction effect at the nozzle charges (can't remember if it's neg or pos) the air around it. Which is bad for computer componants btw :D

You guys beat me to it about the vacums. I think there is static created from the air in the tube moving at different speeds or the friction against the side of the tube. Either way there is a static charge created that can arc into components in the computer. So no vacums

My vaccuum has a plastic nozzle and hose. A more expensive model with a sturdier hose and metal nozzle might be different story, but I don't think a plastic hose and nozzle will shock anything.

I like using a hair dryer to get rid of most of the dust and use a cocktail stick to pick any dust from fans etc.

Failing that, it's hot soapy water.

P.S. I switch off the mains, duh, I'm not that stupid.

Sorry to break it to you Vanity but the static is there regardless of the plastic tube and hose. It is created in the tube as the air passes through it, the diagram below shows what the air moleculs looks like at in the vacum tube, note the seperation of the polarity.

Something like that where the air moleculs seperate from the friction and you have the positives and negatives serparted from the friction. You end up with those charged particles wanting to connect with things in your computer.

I am no expert on this, I just remember learning a bit about this (it actually happens with gas in a container as well :-( ). Anyway its up to you but from everything I know it is a real threat.
