Honestly, I think it's fine as it is. I think it's rather stupid to have to be running to view the minimap. What if I'm a sniper? I'm not going to just get up and run to see the minimap.
Either keep it or remove it all-together.

I have my GUI pretty much turned off. I still have the icons on my map, but no terrain. (I figure that it's just too much of a disadvantage to completely turn off the minimap, since everybody still uses it. I've played a few games were we all turned our GUIs completely off. Really, really, freaking fun)
Also, your 'M' map won't work, but the caps lock one does, even if you aren't a squad leader. In fact, I never use my M map, even as a squad member, since with the capslock map I can select icons and see their names and stuff....

Incredible idea, that looks awsomeCheeseman wrote:I second that. Another possible option would be to get rid of the frame and aerial viewmap of the minimap. Also the ability to press "N" to zoom in or out of the minimap could be disabled. So it looks something like this:
This way you can still see where your objectives and teammates are, but you wont have such detailed view of everything as if you were given your own personal satellite. But pilots and crewmen’s in vehicles should still have the detailed minimap, since most modern military vehicles have GPS systems.
