Tank + Infantry Teamwork

Post by ^Slick »

Many times I see on a server that tanks don't really help infantry all that much, they just go around and shoot what they can. I had an idea whilst in the bath which may help this:

Using the medic reviving code, add in a grenade that the officers kit can use that when thrown will create a image, much like the the way you get icons for dead teammates this would create an icon on the minimap and hud that the crewman kit can see.

Here is an example:

A squad of USMC are trying to cross the main road on Al Basrah, there is a squad of insurgents in the enterable building firing upon and suppressing the team, they stand up to fire and they get shot. The squad leader throws one of these "tank grenades" which could make even have a radio call, e.g. "Need Armour Support Now!". A tank crew sees this on the hud and minimap and head in that direction and take out the men in the building.

For the selfish it would act as a "Zomg lots of enemies an points, get down there killz!!?!?" marker, and for the teamplayers it would work as a "Sombody needs help, lets go!".

Sorry, this thread was rushed. Comments please.

This is certainly possible. EoD did something similar with their smoke grenades - tossing a smoke grenade somewhere would create a ghost icon of a helicopter, to let people know where they should land.

The thing is, you should be able to coordinate armor support like that through either the commander or text chat. It seems like communication has to be extremely lacking, if you have to use smoke grenades to communicate with armor. Perhaps smoke grenades would be better as generic need support marker - that way, they could be used by CAS planes, which would be more realistic.

My orgional idea was the laser type grenades like in Black Hawk Down when they threw it on the roof.

And yes, of course armour should be coordinated via the commander, but I think it would help for the public servers. It'll kinda be like summoning a giant gun. Of course they may only have one, otherwise they will be spammed.

Co-ordination is often lacking, and this is a problem.
But it would appear from other similar good ideas like this is that the solution the DEVs (i think) aim for is Squad Leader / Commander communication (voip).

I hear what you are saying... but what you are asking for is achievable with what we presently have in-game, unfortunately its not utilised fully very often on pub servers.
With well organised squads and commanders, asking for amour or air support should not really be a problem. Its worked for me in the past. (just not often enough)

edit: cant wait for the 'walking' speed tank gearbox!

the heat dummy nades in blackhawk down would realy be cool, if the would just be aims for the heatlocking missles of jets, or perhaps also of helicopters

i know in the 22nd MEU, we pretty much work on infantry and then on some drill days work with armor and infantry support. I'll tell you onething, when you're playing al basra and i'm drivin the tank protecting my fellow grunts on the ground, no RPG is going to be taking them out.

One of the most overwhelming effective strategies to win any map is to have a dedicated armor crew that works with the infantry to take otu targets, and infantry that works with tanks to take out the AT threats.

We have organization where we have 2x 4man teams that are controlled by a higher up. That higher up tells me or my driver that they need support, and we roll in, cover them while they get in, and if any little durka durka wants to let off some rounds, a heat round will be coming through the window.

I usually try to cover infantry with my tank, by driving between them and the enemy.

But some people take to long to do something and usually risk the tank, so I can't really be bothered anymore.

I like the idea. But is it realistic? a grenade to mark out tank targets? Ive had rounds where the tank used the infantry to kill close range insurgents, and the infantry used tanks to kill the long range targets... we watched each others backs. I think that the best option is to use the tankers in your squad and communicate thru mics. I like your idea but it just doesnt seem realistic. maybe you could put in the command rose something like "need armor support" and have tht player flash on the map.

Want to know why we go off on our own? Because If we try too assist you guys in the City regions of maps than we get insurgents coming out from all kinds of angles shooting at us. Give me cover and I'll give you a big gun.

When in a tank or any vehical if possible...I try to put my Steal between bullets and friendlies. Sadly, it doesn't work well in the end for me...but for them it can make or break a fight.

This was happening through Juniper commanding the other day for my team. Was very nice to be able to bring in an A-10, Cobra, Tank, and even a HMMWV at one point. Although, I would like to see something like that for when there's less coordination on the team.

I know its hardcoded but can you imagine how simple and effective it would be if the SL's could communicate? Just talk to the SL with the armour squad and coordinate in real time. Oh how sweet it would be, EA\Dice why deny us this, Why!??

I think in PR, you could let everyone communicate over an open channel besides the squad channels. The players are somewhat more mature, or at least are expected to be. Alas, we have to make do with what we have right now.
