The opinion of some people is that the H&K 416 was a contingency made around the time Army started having doubts about the XM-8 program. I'm not too sure what happened with that lawsuit from Colt though. Bushmaster was also listed, because Colt lost plenty of sales in the domestic market to Bushmaster, FN makes the M-16's and HK attempted to take their M4 contract away with the 416.

H&K developed the HK 416 as a supplemental upper reciever or entire firearm, to be marketed and sold primarily to Law enforcement. The goal of the HK 416 was to make a more reliable and modular upper reciever for M4's. This firearm/ upper reciever was not designed as a contingency to the XM8. HK was succsessful in thier task. The HK 416 is much much more reliable than the regular variety Colt M4. The U.S. Military probably will not adopt the HK 416 because HK does not have a manufacturing plant for this model in the U.S. . The U.S. Military's equipment for the most part has to be manufactured in the U.S. Colt Lost thier law suit against bushmaster and H&K for supossed trademark infringment. Further more the FN FAL and HK G3 have nothing in common other than magazine capacity and caliber, same goes for the FN SCAR and HK 416. These Fireamrs have copletely different operating systems. Just because a firearm looks like another that means nothing....What counts is whats inside the firearm, the operating system, How it handles recoil, accuracy, does it malfunction, weight, is it controlable on burst or full automatic settings, can you customize it to your specs..... these are things that can only learned with expierence for the most part. So before acting like a weapons expert 3Libras and Cerberus, and making stupid remarks about guns you have never shot, let alone touched.

The M4 is already being remodedled and is due for a face lift in v0.7.
The addition of the 416 makes little to no sense. Colt sued SOCOM (and H&K for using the M4 name, which is why its now the HK416 rather than H&K M4) for not holding a competition for its adoption before they could get hold of more than 200 at most (which is why the SCAR contest was held). US SF should either carry the M4, M4A1 or SCAR. The HK416 makes sod all sense for addition in PR.
Yes, its a fairly impressive weapon, but this is Project Reality, not Project cool guns.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
Many thanks to [R-DEV]Adriaan for the sig!

BTW, what sites, other than FAS.org and worldguns.ru havea good archive of XX, XXI century firearms? AR's and SMG's preferably?
