I think you should be fine from a 10ft or so fall. But also, it's probably hardcoded, but i'd like to see if you fall lets say 15ft you take SOME damage, and you are forced prone to simulate having to roll after landing and you lose some stamina.

Anything over 20ft should kill you. Because although IRL you wouldn't die from a 20ft fall, with combat gear on there's a good chance you're gona break something and be out of action.

I imagine that if you don't break a bone or hit a sharp edge, that the reason you get the acid trip swirly view, is from bleeding out internally from hitting the ground. Regardless, internally or externally, it's too much.

I like that idea of being forced prone. It would also make it so choppers are less likely to kill someone after dropping them off.

Just to add personal experiance to this suggestion ive tried to run down stairs with a full burgen and an SA80 (full combat dress) and sure your not as agile as you would be but it doesnt hurt....let alone cause me to bleed....

Jumping from 3 foot ledges again shouldnt hurt as a man can simply bend over put hand and floor and hop down, this of course can not be simulated but can be reflected in the fact that you take no damage from this.

Although falling from heights above 10ft will probably cause damage and ingame should cause plenty of hurt.

This would not make the game "easier". I believe it would make it more realistic. Even if you were to fall down some stairs, I don't believe anyone would start to bleed out internally. I think we should be able to jump off choppers 4 feet in the air and not get hurt, the military does it.

I agree that falling 20 feet off a building should pretty much kill you and that damage should be increased when falling from those heights, but falling from miniscule heights should not be causing much, if any damage.

I would like you to explain to me, MadTommy, why decreasing fall damage when going down some damn steps or jumping 4 feet from a chopper would make the game more "arcadey and less strategic".

Another suggestion I have is that if you are dropping from 4 or so feet, that instead of getting hurt, you have no stamina to simulate recovering from the fall.
If disagreeing with your suggestion was not allowed, you should have stated that at the start. Calling me a prick is not called for.

I gave you my feedback in two threads. One with pictures.

You only go into a bleed state tripping down stairs when you are already hurt badly.

I’d imagine that damage vs objects vs fall height cannot be broken up neatly like you ask. If you don’t want to get hurt from stairs and small falls then I’ll be jumping down 3 story buildings. They are inevitably connected.

In game a soldier with full heath who sprints down the steps does not start to bleed out. If you look at the speed he takes those steps at, you'll see that it's very unrealistic. Just don't sprint on the steps. Problem solved.

Also, 4 foot drops in game don't hurt you. One cardboard box is about 4 feet. And lo and behold, you can walk off one fine.

I think you guys just need to work on your falling. I never seem to have trouble with this.

I think lighter soldiers when they jump by few feet (3-4) should have less damage than the heavier soldiers since heavier soldiers carry their pack and uses more strength to hold up. Jumping off anything over say 6 feet should hurt you, but anything below that should be taken away stamina.

Jumps under 6 feet don't hurt you though. Think about it. With boots, the average soldier in-game is probably a bit over 6 feet. Things under that height are dumpsters, boxes, fences, that kind of thing. And you can walk off of those things just fine.

No, you just said I was whining when I was making a suggestion (I have included the quote below). So I believe calling you a prick was perfectly called for as this is the suggestion area of the forums and I was not ranting or "whining", I was expressing my opinion on a subject. You were being extremely condescending. I do not want to discuss it any further as I don't want the thread locked. If you want to take it up further with me, do it via PM.
Sound like you are having a little whine.. and you want the game made a little easier. This is a bad suggestion, as you can presently fall off two story buildings and survive, if you know how.

WastelandSoldier, I agree that we shouldn't be sprinting down steps, that's a pretty good point. However, there are heights at which we really should not be taking damage. My main concern, I guess, is with dropping people off from helos onto uneven ground where you can't land. I have jumped off a chopper that was barely off the ground and I received damage.

I know what 60 pounds of gear feels like as I am a firefighter. I know jumping from heights of 4 feet really would not hurt you in any significant way.

I think a way to remedy the chopper drop off situation would be like, as someone previously mentioned, to automatically go prone with no stamina left after jumping.

I agree with his suggestion 100%. I dropped 10 feet from a tree and didn't hurt my self i didn't bleed to death on my way home either.
The damage obtained by running down stairs is stupid normal people wouldn't run like people do in game either so you cant make a realistic thing based on an unrealistic thing in the first place.
All these people who go "Have you ever fallen over with all that blady blah on"
Question is have YOU ever fallen over with that gear on most probably no so dont comment on it.
I havnt fallen over with a load of issue kit on but i have had a 90kg Yamaha crosser land on me resulting in a big bruise and a limp for about 2 hours.

I gave you my opinion. And i gave you reasonable reasons, with evidence.
And even after you call me a 'complete prick', i remain polite and try and give you further reasoning for my views. The fact that i felt that you were "having a little whine" is hardly a grave insult. If you were so insulted by this I'm sorry. Its a shame you can get past this comment, it was opinion.

Well, if the fall damage is hard coded, then scale health.
Let say a fall the length it takes to enter the "Parachute" stance is distance X. Falling distance X deals '25' damage. So, Y(Health) - 25 means you're down to 75 from falling down about one story. So, if we can't change X, lets change Y.
If we multiple all damage and recovery systems by 2 (100 health = bullet does 45; while 200 health = bullet does 90. Healing recovers 2 health with 100, 200 means it'd recover 4 health) This way, fall damage is still only doing 25, but now 25 is 1/8 the health rather than 1/4.

As for helicopters, I think, not sure how effective this would be, but moving the exit points lower than they are now, reducing the distance from bail to ground, would help with those Combat Drops. Maybe even a special seat that drops you out an increased distance. Testing would be needed to perfect this, but I'm sure tiny changes could have all positive effects while larger (Spawn 5 meters down to simulate fast rope) could have some exploiting issues.

Just my input for making this work better, since I can't count the number of times I've died, directly or indirectly, because I fell just a foot too far that I, a fat lazy American, could of done with nothing more than a wince after hitting. The reports from others (45 KG roll down 200 feet hill, MG3 down the stairs, SA80 with full gear down the stairs) are realistic proof that though not the most comfortable thing to do, it is still very possible without crying for medic to come over with Mr. and Mrs. Shock paddles.

kudos for keeping this within PMs.

Back OT - regardless of whether or not it's realistic to sustain damage from tripping down the steps or jumping that 4ft from a LB - this is a limited engine that can't replicate RL with all it's quirks and IMO should be more forgiving about the small things.

For example, you come across a slope with a 45 deg incline and you want to get down with your combat gear. The next gently sloping incline is a couple hundred meters off.
In RL you would probably lean back, and slide slowly down on your butt or something, digging in your heels to reduce your speed and as long as the slope isn't 300 ft long, most likely to get to the bottom without a scratch.
In PR, since you can't do all that, your walk, slide, run down the hill depending how the engine is feeling. And you get hurt.
On the other hand, in a situation where you wouldn't even attempt in RL, you DON'T get hurt in PR.

So give the player the benefit of the doubt at it being a more favourable scenario and limit the damage.

Falls that are 3 times your height or 15 feet are considered signifigant methods of injury. Your gonna be messed up unless you get lucky and do something special to break your fall. In all of your gear the likelyhood of you getting hurt increases. Drops from certain heights below 10 feet do too much damage at times. I think what is really frustrating is how you slide down certain slopes, that are not all that steep, to your death. Then there is the combination of sliding down a short hill, then a drop off of 5 feet that kills you. I don't think it would be something easily fixed when there are so many other parts of the game that the Devs are hard at work messing with.

lol.. first of all... if it wasnt 2 am, id have LOL'd at your pic Determined... in a non-making fun of way... i just love the shirt! :)

i agree about the sliding being dumb... the issue... if im not being captain obvious, is that over the period of a slide down a hill in BF2, your speed increases, as if you were actually just plain old falling from the sky (the whole, what is it, accleration from gravity if like 9.8 meters a second?)..
anyway, the engine doesnt seem to take friction into account when sliding...
when sliding down a hill, you shouldnt keep speeding up (unless you are running forward by means of "W"...or "up"...)
