Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you change your ingame nickname with gamespy?

If you can't read somebody's name, just make up an annoying nickname, based on what you can read, and call them that. A little bit of annoyance in return for them having an annoying name. I find that a lot of names out there are somewhat ambiguous as to how to pronounce them, but I never find myself in a situation where I can't talk to the person I want to talk.

I remember having a guy in my squad who had a really long name, not har to pronounce but really long. I kindly said about this to him and he said to just call him "a*shole or something". And so we did.
"medic"
"a*shole coming!"
"oh **** a*shole down"

LMAO 2Recon
I have about 10 screennames I play under and most are pretty simple to say on VIOP, Armed being probably the hardest if you say all the names.
While you can't 100% judge a player by his/her name ...anyone named any variation of JackBauer will probably suck.
I would use "SuperClitSix" as my call sign under the new program as it is the shortest name I have but "I_am_JohnDoe" is pretty easy as well.

You know, I think anyone with "sniper" or "snipa" in their username shouldn't be ever allowed to use the sniper kit...

for some reason i tend to get called purple visions a lot

in dod there was a group who started up called OWP who put the tag before there name to show they were for team work and serios fun but soon as it started every idiot under the sun came out and started to use the tag just to spoil the whole idea, its a great idea in theory but as the mod gets bigger it will start to get abused sadly

I often see really bad/inexperienced players with official looking names/clantags/modnames, and really good players without(such as myself :p ). I have found there to be no correlation between somones name and their lvl of skill. Never judge a player by his name!

This would be a easy solution to find people who would like to play seriously. Nickname is a nickname, yes. I'm not shooting down anyone with Robocop as player name, what I am saying is that if his name would be PR|J.Doe, I'd like to invite him to my teamwork squad for sure.

I don´t think that poeple are too keen on changing their nicks, perhaps it would be better to create a sticky thread where people can post their nationality, experience, other requests and so on. Kinda like a clan signup thread but for people who are´nt interested in clanplaying. The easiest way to find people is to play a lot and be active on VOIP.
Beware of French and Russian squads though, most of the time they´ll speak their native language, but from time to time they try out in english without anyone except themselves know what they say 8-)

I want to add another caveat to the name game.
If you are using a nick named after a character in: Band of Brothers or Black Hawk Down ..... chances are you suck.

Ziak is my last name, thats why its my username for everygame I play. And for those who cant pronounce it for some strange reason, say it like -Zie-ak-. The ie sound like the ie in pie... There you go, now try it for yourself. :p

Oi, and for any of you who try to find out my real name, good luck. There are millions people with the last name Ziak in the USA and Czech Republic/Slovakia.

sometimes I wish tactical shooters with squads would just assign people callsigns instead of their login name, I mean ok yeah you create a unique login for your game but once you join Alpha squad you are assigned a callsign according to the order you joined into that squad. So for instance the Squad Leader of Alpha squad is the "6" so he appears as Alpha-6 (using BF2s 6 man squad as an example)

and everyone below him takes the next lowest number

Alpha-5
Alpha-4
Alpha-3
Alpha-2
Alpha-1

That way you get a more military/tactical feel to communications.

Ya know what I hate the most is people whose names that aren't even names, they're more like...phrases? IsHoTuDeaD, WhoWantsSome, ImOnFiya, etc etc. Sounds so stupid when I have to refer to someone by retarded screen names like that in game.

sorry bit off topic...but I had to get that out

I think it's a bad idea (just because there's no way you can get a whole community to go by it, and if you could then everyone would just do it (including noobs) and that would defeat the whole purpose of it.

I mean, I think no one should be using PR in their name, and I think the devs shouldn't allow (much less want) the tourney players to use [PR] at the start of their name. Cuz I'll tell you, when people join the game and they see guys with [PR] tags, they are going to think those people are the devs.

I know I wouldn't want all the tourney guys representing me if I was the dev team, because what if some of them act like total retards, it's just like a massive group of guys who you can't keep track of them or their actions, and yet people think they ARE the devs when they play.....

There's a guy called "AustralianSniper0" on the BigD server, who's probably the best SL I've ever seen.

I just try to remember that theses people probably made these accounts back when they still played vanilla.

My Online Account name is the same as here: [CoFR]Red_Halibut, so when I join a squad I usually say something like "Squad Leader, Red Halibut, Call Sign "Red", Signing in as <KITNAME>", that way the SL knows that I am there, that I have VoIP, what to call me, and what kit I have.

On Edit: The point that I was trying to make, and completely forgot to make, was that rather than use a prefix, just choose a callsign based on your nick and use that for VoIP.

JohnnyPissoff wrote:You can only go so far branding or herding a FPS gamer. We are by nature independent individuals and some aren't into clans or affiliations. I've found there are only 3 good ways in a public game to get in with a good working squad :

- Get to know the players and jump in squad with the ones you feel most comfortable with.
- leave any squad or server that displeases you until you find a comfortable fit.
- If you are Squad Leader, don't hesitate to kick those players that refuse to respond to your orders or are disruptive. Your solid Squad mates will respect you for it.
Very well said. Those 3 rules should be something like the "PR player's creed"...

only problem is, it takes two seconds to make a new name...
so if thats what it takes to get people to let you in, even the people who dont give a hoot can do it too.
my name is OkitaMakoto on it... or something close... havent looked in a long time... is that sad? anyway, SL are like, o-key-tah...go do this...
they might not say it right, but hell, it works, and they dont think im a loser or not a team player or whatever...
if anything they think im japanese... till i reply to them in perfect engrish.
: )

my take on it... play the game, its a mod, its a game, poeple will be people, if they dont team play, kick from squad (the more random their name, the easier to remeber in the future "hey, i remember last game teh_leetanalromp was a teamkiller, better kick from squad")

if anything, having weird names gives you all a reason to stop at your main point and talk for a second

"hey, your names weird as hell, how do you want it said? oh by the way, what kit are you best at? wanna go medic for us? ok, great, nice meeting you,my names teh_leetanalromp"

"yours is weird too, you go rifleman and give us teh_ammoz"

see? adapt and become stronger...
