For quiet water approach a Kayak may work.
As long as its much faster than swimming.
A multi person Kayak (maybe 3 person) can travel faster the more paddlers aboard.
Every time I go kayaking I get a lot of bruises, scracthes, and my right ankle gets a bad swelling EVERY time. Now imagine that with full battle gear on your back.

Reconnaissance troops use kayaks in archipelago (sp.?) and coastal circuimstance's. Atleast we did use a 2 man kayak. Only thing quieter than that is swimming or even better diving.
