Sniper Chart

Post by mat552 »

This has been bothering me. Can the sniper kit get a little notepad with the bullet drop at different distances written on it? That way, a SOFLAM or other distance measurement device can help you figure out how much to let it drop. I have to keep writing them down irl because I keep losing mine. Perhaps then the Marksman class could be given a distance measurement device?

You really don't need a tool but it would be cool to have a laser range finder.

I was sniping on that huge desert map last night from well beyond 500m from a mountain top, I was firing about half body length of the target above and scoring kill shots.

I like this idea. However, it is a little extreme. Although, I might agree with it, other rambo players would never use it or even understand it probably. Plus, it wouldnt be that affective in a game like this where you can shoot multiple shots without worrying much. 1 Shot kill isnt all that important in this game. Yes yes I know there are times where it would help but its rare that 1 shot kill is a key factor.

I don't like that.

I've been thinking about suggesting for them to redo the scope graphics to add vertical notches so people like me (who snipe sometimes, but do it good) who fire a range finding shot, 'mark' the hit on their screen (Mentally of course, I haven't had a glass screen since the ball dropped on 2000) then try to put them on a target before firing. I tell ya, it's hard to hit a target on a memory marked bare line, especially if you've been covering the area for a while with no contacts.

All I'd ask for was something like this ASCII depiction.

Code: Select all

    / \
   /-|-\
  / -|- \
 /_|_|_|_\
 \ | | | /
  \ -|- /
   \-|-/
    \ /
Only much less crowded, smaller notches, and more of them.

well, dont count on this but.....

The devs have recently discovered how to zero rifles (all the 0.6 beta rifles are zeroed to differing ranges), and this means its possible to change the drop of the rifle on the fly, which means you can select bullet drop through say the inventory screen, which means you MIGHT be able to adjust the 'elevation' on the sniper crosshairs to account for different ranges ...... maybe ;)

I'd still prefer my vertical notch suggestion IN ADDITION TO THE RIFLE ZEROING since that is much easier to change on the fly. Especially since any good sniper can cover a medium target of interest and a long range smorgus board, or visa-versa.

You do realize that with something that awesome, you have no choice but to include it no matter what. :p

Very cool if the sniper could adjust sights on the fly. However if you have no means of determining distance be it via the scope notches or with range finding optics it would seem a mute point, no? I'm sure you guys have a thought out the implemintation on this though. I'm constantly impressed with the new elements you sneaky devs come up with.

IRL a sniper would NEVER use "Kentucky Windage". They are taught how to estimate range (w/o a laser or other instrument), cross wind, and elevation very accurately. They will even factor in things like shooting through glass or leading moving targets. They then set the sights of the rifle with a very high percent rate of accuracy. The only time they would not adjust sights for each target would be with multiple moving targets, lead is done for each target on the fly.

That said, I don't like the bullet drop in PRM for snipers only, you just would not hold over a target that way. However I recognize that you need something to make it a little bit harder to pwn at god like distances.

DukeMeister, you guys rock. If we could have adjustable sights, man that would be cool!

I personally like the idea of being able to adjust the elevation. If we are going to be using battling on larger maps in the future, this is something that will begin to be more and more effective as people beging to snipe at actual sniping ranges instead of sniping at ranges where they should easily be able to reach with an assault rifle.

Anti-personnel should get camo.

Anti-personnel makes the perfect sniper buddy.
