This would result in everytime a Pilot gets downed, he gets strafed by an attack chopper, friend or foe...

Doesn't yellow smoke mean clear LZ and red means hot LZ to the americans?

Anyone got the colour coding for Brit, PLA or MEC forces?

If you start playing with smoke colours, they have to be correct for all armies and the players are going to have some nervy moments, especially the pilots when they fly in trying to remember based on what side they are on what the colours mean :)

You think too much and you think other people think as much as you.

Your thinking is wrong methinks.

Actually, just watched the film 84 Charlie Mopic today (pretty good vietnam war film) and they explained it in their docu-drama style filming.

and as to insurgent smoke, hope that wasn't aimed at me because I didn't mention insurgents at all, just proper forces :)

Well, use the Green to order something there (evac, cover, medic support)
and the pilot's Red smoke only, when your ride is close enough to see it, so they know your exact location...

Smoke Grenades to mark targets for Aircraft is not a good Idea as we are Travaling so fast (Faster in 0.6 :-) ) that we barely have time to make a Flypast to Check Target (otherwise Result is Lots ok TK's) As it has been said time and time again a maker that marked Targets on the HUD would be better.

i think the devs should make the smoke reach high and be seenable from at least a 400 meter radius

Yeah, I was gonna say. The smoke's gonna have to be pretty thick and high for the jet to spot the target. The trouble with smoke is:

The enemy can see it

You have to get close to place it

It's not really indicating a specific target. More of a general "bomb this whole fvcking area".

Better to just put an ATTACK marker.

i think the colors can mean anything as long as the signals are predetermined, i think the smoke signals you mentioned were vietnam era but i've seen footage of a marine NCO in the battle of fallujah have one of his men throw red smoke into the middle of a street and the NCO informs someone over his radio that the smoke is a screen only and does not communicate any signal.

and my suggestion within this suggestion...something that i was thinking about posting...

give the Officer kit an assault rifle with the grenade launcher attachment BUT give him only colored smoke rounds (no explosives) for his GL so that he can mark targets for air support from longer distances instead of having to run within 30m of an enemy position and get killed merely trying to throw a smoke grenade.

If, and it's a big if, you have a commander all the SL need to do is use his attack marker on the position to be bombed and the commander can trasnfer that marker to the squad with the aircraft.
You can place that marker from the cap-lok map and there is no need to expose yourself to enemy fire while doing it.

Strobes should be a possibility because early versions of the LB had a blinking nav light on the tail that would work great as a strobe.
I'm not sure about making an IR-only strobe though.

I know in EOD that when you request a pickup you see a helicopter icon on the screen. What about using a rose command for airstrike and having a symbol pop up on the minimap to guide the pilot in.
