Tank target designation.

Post by Nimble »

I searched and couldn't see it having been suggested before so I thought I'd bring it up. I'm sure this is somehow hard coded but I'll suggest it none the less. Basically I'm wondering, given the new driver/commander periscope view for tanks in 0.6, if the driver/commander could somehow be given a way to 'paint' targets for his gunner. In my opinion this would make it a great deal easier to tell your gunner what exactly you want him to be firing at. Maybe I'm the only one .. but I run into abit of "Enemy tank, 3 O'clock" "What, WHERE?!" "NO, your other 3 O'clock!" "Wait, which way is 3?" *KABOOM* when using VOIP communication in tanks. Just a suggestion

I completaly SUPPORT this idea , however i feel life most (if not all) of the forums members will say "use voip , voip FTW"

if the devs decide to make this in the game , they can use this code from this guy to paint targets , so the gunner can see where to shoot .

On most modern tanks the TC can override the gunners control of the turret and automatically traverse the gun towards the target.

Umm the clock reference is always relative to the main body of the tank so as long as you know which end of the tank is the front and which end is the rear you should not have any trouble identifying a reference such as "GUNNER, TARGET TANK 3 O'CLOCK!"

Or you could use Rhinos superb version "GUNNER, TARGET TANK RIGHT O'CLOCK!" ;)

But yeah, VOIP and/or a target designator would help. :D

I support this idea. Many times I would tell my gunner that there was a target at, say, 3 o'clock, and he would point the barrel in the general direction of the target, but not exactly at it. Then, I'd have to actually tell him "traverse right! right! ok, now up!" before the barrel was pointed anywhere close to the target.

This would be especially useful on long range maps, where the enemy tank can be 2km away, behind a hill, with only its turret visible. In those situations, the TC has to find the target, and then the gunner has to repeat his work and also find the target himself.

Yes! This is a great idea, just like OpFlashpoint. Gunner could be surveying the area while the commander spots a APC or something sneaking round the side, bam commander marks target gunner swings round and blasts it all without needing to yell at the gunner. This is helps people without VOIP or with their sound turned off and is much simpler than trying to describe the enemy's location.
Just for vehicles though, it would be unfair to mark infantry too.
I want it in game now!

I understand people who say VOIP as a solution but you also gotta realize, when you're pubbin. You might be playing with some random dude from antarctica or w/e. The thing is, that would never happen in real life. There wouldnt be a communication barrier in real life because they train and work together for months.

And you know what, this will give another thing for the drivers to do, and there would be a nice blind spot behind the tank too, and that would add a realistic touch to trying to flank the tank.

i've seen this before, but wasnt that in DCX or something? where the driver had the "commander view" and could paint a target, and if you were the gunner, you'd have like on the top of your UI a yellow line that would keep point to the right or left, and then point down on the target so you knew exactly where the target is?

if they could put that in PR it would be overwhelmingly helpful.

Make friends in Pubs, then you can tank with voip.

However this is a good system.

How about the driver controlling the turret, but the gunner acutally firing the thing? Nah, to vanilla.

I say we figure out a way to allow tanks to turn in place (One tread goes forward, one goes back, spins without having to drive, thus loosing a good position or giving away your place via movement.) so the Driver could just spin the cannon around along with the whole tank body to "show" the gunner where the target is.

That, or spot the target with your gunner's mini-map zoomed out, or just type too him if it is that far out and can't be Q-Spotted.

Well, it does have it's place here since it is a suggestion to implement better target designation for the Tank Commander... But, I guess it could also count as another suggestion... I
ll go start a thread after I've done all the required Searching and such.
