Tank Break Danceing

Post by ZanderArch »

After a few searches and a quick run through the "Already Been suggested" thread, I deemed it an postable subject.

Tank spinning. As of now, to turn a tank, you have to go forward and backward while holding one of the side to side directions to spin the tank around to point the direction you want. But, that isn't realistic, now is it?
In real life, tanks can spin around in place simply by having one tread go forward while the other goes backwards.

Adding this would add to the realism and general make the gun more fun for Tank Drivers.

Of course, this is probably hard coded as if it was possible, it would of been done, but what about adding "thrusters" on the sides that would forcefully spin the tank around?

When doing the slow-forward while holding left or right technique, you move painfully slowly. From what I've seen, tracked vehicles in real life can move much faster than that.

Hold D and then press W. You'll turn around like a tank.

Most keyboards can only accept 2-3 commands simultaniously so I doubt you would want that.

Reverse + Turn has the same effect as Forward + Turn. Both move you in a spiral pattern that will move you away from your original position.
Test: Take a tank and put on of the four corners of it near a wall. Start spinning away from that wall. In about 3-4 spins, you will have started to scratch the wall with the corner.

I'm suggesting Zero Point Turning. Spinning around in place, not going around in circles.

I know that doing more than one turn is pointless, but I'm saying it still moves you. So if you squeezed your self into a spot and you try to turn out of it, most likely your not going to fit on the way out.

And, yes, real tanks may move, but only a few inches before the treads sync and they start to spin. Plus, they react much faster, which can't be done in PR since you have to inch left and right before you can point the way you want to go before speeding off.

I guess you've guys never seem a large armour movement? Take the new Oil Field Map. The US start out with 2 APCs and a 2 (I think) Tanks on one side of a bridge. To get to the action they either cross the bridge or hope the dry river bed doesn't get too steep to climb. I've seen all of them roll of the spawn points at almost the exact same time and when they get bottle necked on that bridge, someone usually ends up shooting the coax machine gun at someone. If the tanks had Zero Point turning they could maneuver much more easily.

I rarely drive tanks in PR since I know there is usually someone better at putting a SABOT in the some enemy armour, but when I do, I'm always bothered by the fact I have to back up and go forward for a few minutes just to get lined up with something I hit because I was watching my 6 and not my 12.

Plus, this suggestion stems from the Tank Designation thread where it would be useful to swing your gunner's line of sight towards an enemy, and, if you had good team work, a 180 turret turn wouldn't require the gunner to lift his mouse off his pad two or three times.

No duh. But some times you have to take your MBT to the streets and navigating them can be pain.

I don't see what the problem with my suggestion is, it's not like I'm suggesting they shoot A-Bombs or anything stupid, I just want them to turn in place and your tearing the idea of making it easier on the driver apart like I want him to have a laser he can shoot out of the parascope that'd kill everything it touched.

Just got an idea out of the new jet taxi engine.

Would it be possible to make the tank accelerate when you press the turn keys in a similar way that the taxi engine works on planes? Not much just enough to make the tank turn. Then you wouldn't have to tap the forward key and it'd make controlling of the tank a bit smoother.
