I personally don't really like being the squad leader, but I am a good one. Mainly only try squadleader as a tank commander or bradley....
Basically just watch others.
If you join a squad with a bunch of guys from a clan, chances are, you're not going to learn THAT much, because first of all, they're probably going to be using external comms (like vent or TS), and second of all, they know each other, and therefore the squad dynamics are different for them - the squadleader of a clan squad does not have to beat a bunch of strangers into submission.
Which brings me to my second point - sometimes people on a server are just incapable of working in a squad. Not much you can do if you can't find anyone who'll follow you. Yes, you can kick them, but if there's no replacement, kicking them is just futile. Many people in PR join squads just because they're expected to, even if they have no intention of following orders or anything.
Beyond that, it's the usual advice - listen to your squadmembers, don't bark orders at them like a drill sergeant. On the other hand, try to keep track of them, and if they're wandering off somewhere, talk to them directly. Tell them what you want to do and what you need them to do it achieve it. If all else fails, bring a bag of squadmember snacks along and reward them for good behavior.
