I believe 3ds max is the preferred program around here.

I remember the first time I opened 3dsmax... you should have seen my face. I was in utter confusion for a good week. I played around and created a few models but then gave up when I realized my PC simply wasn't fast enough to do any serious renders.

autocad is used for architecture. 3ds max for all sorts of stuff. They're both made by the same company though.

Well I not going to go out and say download it from some bittorrent thing....but no one cares if your using it not to make money. I myself use max everyday (visual effects guy). But mine is bought and paid for.

I had an interesting talk with a software developer once and he told me that most software developers have no problem with ppl downloading there software (the $$$ ones that is) and long as there are not using it to make money. And the idea behind it is, if ppl are using it already when they hit the job scene they will tell there employers this is what I like using, and in turn the companeys will buy what software the staff knows. I dont condone stealing software, but I turn my head when it comes to learning it.

As far as what program to use, you can use really any version of max form 4-8 and be able to output them. But be aware, its not some easy package. I been doing VFX for 7 years with Max and still dont know everything.

Dont rip on GMAX, it's a great tool.

It is missing the more complex features of 3DSMAX, especially the rendering options. It is still great for modelling for the beginner (takes a while to go from beginner to intermediate with 3DSMAX anyhow).

Everyone seems to like Max the most....though its time is coming to an end. With Maya and XSI growing so much the outdated ness of Max id showing...though they are using the same engine they have been for YEARS...just throwing more addons in and such.

I am not saying don't use Max...I just don't prefer it that much. I use XSI it has such a smooth and quick flow, not that Max doesn't but I have used Max then I came to XSI and after learning it (only took a couple days) I was in awe!...though I am not on this mod so I doubt you care :p .

It is good for beginners but not for making full models for games.

You realise maya has been bought by autodesk? (the guys from 3ds max)

XSI is growing really fast yes, especially considering it's great price. I don't think max'll leave the scene very fast though. It's a solid product.
