I read the forums just about every day, but rarely log in since there is usually nothing I have to contribute that hasn't been said or won't be said before I post it. That and 9 times out of 10 people get flamed for not using the search, even if they say they did. After a few weeks of watching that, I just don't bother and am content to get little snippets of updated content and gameplay from cruising around in my spare time.

BTW, this mod is the definitive way to play BF2 imho, so thanks for the great work and keep it up. Can't wait for the full .6 release.

Actually, that's a pretty good point and one that bugs me endlessly with online forums. New members have to start somewhere, and it's easy to forget that sometimes the first time someone registers with say, the PR forums, it may well be the first time they've ever used online messageboards/forums.

They ask what in their eyes is a very a simple and possibly oft-asked question and suddenly, they get their heads bitten off by "SEARCH damnit!" and "If we had a quid every time an idiot like you asked that question" responses from whatever community they've just tried to join.

People can't be expected to learn net etiquette instantly, and I can't help but wonder if some people who come to popular forums such as these and just read through others' posts sometimes refrain from joining in the belief that the first time they state their opinion or ask a question, they'll be pounced on.

Sure, it's frustrating to have to answer posts about things that have been asked time and time again for old members, but surely- if it bugs you to reply, don't reply? I'd've thought the best way to get people to change their behaviour is to teach rather than yell

I used to be in that category. I just read the forums for about a year till i finally registered. Guess i just figured i never had anything constructive to say anyway.

Problem is though,
a. not all of them have been silent readers for 6 months. Loads of them might've registered on their first visit and posted straight away.
b. even if they should've learned something, it's never smart to start bashing them about it. See somebody ask a 'stupid' question? Leave the topic alone, report the post and wait for a mod to close it. The mod should politely tell them they should search before posting. I guess that's too much to hope for, but it'd help getting people in the community. And believe me, the end result is almost the same because once they get involved and accepted they WILL learn to use the search button.

yeah alot of our moderators are heavy handed i can agree there....

maybe it should be like the TG server...once a new person joins one of the old ones get booted.. AKA a breath of fresh air...haha...

seriously though any of you who flame new members should be flamed yourselves as you are doing little good and helping no one...

ive thought about opening a new guy thread where someone can protect them from the digital animals that lurk around here...

How about a "New Members" forum area; someplace where new members are encouraged to ask whatever questions they want to ask- as many Stickies as possible explaining how to effectively use the search function, a list of "closed" items for discussion (aka Fastropes lol), a quick gameplay introduction, directions to the Wiki etc etc.

Old members who were interested in helping out new members to the community can drop in and provide help, guideance etc. Members who get irritated within seconds by a post count of 10 or less can just not visit it...
