Is the prevalence of optical enhancements on assault rifles realistic?

@ op & ot: yes it's realistic. most modern armies are made up of Rifleman as the sort of core load out, then have several specialist roles with training on specific weapons. The American is one of the most specialised doctrines afaik whereas other military doctrines have a more generalist approach, but still the bulk of the forces are a guy carrying some sort of assault rifle with some sort of optical sight.
