Commander toys....im in love
Just finished playing Jabal Al-Burj on :IGI: server and I wanted to share something with the community...
Before any of the open beta's came out I made sure to read the online guide about the new commander assets etc. and I have to say that although it sounded pretty cool in theory, I had no idea about what they looked like, how they worked etc in game. Ive played a good few rounds and I had never seen any of them used.
Tonight on Al Burj though, I finally realised what it was all about - and i gotta say, the potential for this new addition is incredible. Our tightly nit squad (MEC) were defending West Beach and with the commanders help we started deploying the assets around the place. We had ourselves dug in deep...it was really something else. We had a couple of AA emplacements at each end of the beach, sandbag walls scattered along the shore with barbed wire on all sides and a bunker and a firebase in the middle. As someone on our squad said, it was like something outta "sim city" the way we were putting these things up and some team members were gettin stuck in with their shovels n wrenches etc while others were scanning the horizon for threats.
Like i said earlier, it wasnt until i actually seen it in action that i realised how cool this stuff is. Reading it on the online manual doesnt do it justice. I think the devs have done a fantastic job with these additions. Truely great stuff. Hopefully when .6 comes out everyone will be tuned into the benefits of these assets.
I for one cant wait....

All from CoH. West beach and Easst beach heavily defended can be hell to get through.

I'm not sure, how many players were on?
One thing I hate, is being a Squad member, I just can't believe what people think of.
Them: Charge'em!
Me : Get some supressing fire on 'em. You three take the right side and lob grenades. Then get some smokes and give supressing fire for the other two, and take the left. A friendly tank and comes over the hill, and gives us support and we take the flag.
I don't think I was there, though.

hehe to be honest I really wasn't sure how these would work out lol.
Was all part of a comprehensive way to move completely away from the vBF2 spawning mechanics. We actually started working on this shortly after we released v0.4. We want as much as possible for things in the game world to be controlled by players. And as much as possible we don't want any single player to have a major impact.
BUT.. the commander should be VERY powerful is my view. Not in that ghey raining down artillery on uber zoomed enemy contacts way... but in a way that they can have a major impact on the outcome of a round IF their team coalesces around the [sensible] commander's directives.
Originally the idea was pretty wacked .. but we polished it up from a design perspective... then we ran into all kinds of challenges making it work.. and the guys did a brilliant job coming up with some amazingly creative approaches to making it work.
Obviously still needs some polish and play testing across a full release cycle... but I think they are a great addition.
Wait till we take it to the next level lol
Nutty stuff in the works hehe. I'll explain more about it once we get through v0.6 and validate some of the things we want to do (building on the v0.6 Commander asset foundation).

Think it was 10 v 10...then it dropped to 7 v 7.El_Vikingo wrote:I'm not sure, how many players were on?
If i remember right at one stage I was bitching about teams cos it was 7 on 5 lol. You dropped out shortly after then more came on and it was 12 v 12. Was about 2 hours ago....
West beach looked like something outta the Normandy landings after we had built everything haha. We repelled the USMC air and sea attacks for ages

-Yeah, I'm currently setting up Engineers Squad alot, supporting the commander in asset construction, setting up mine fields and demolitions. Had a great time at Jabal Al-Burj today, didn't get off East Beach the entire time but set up command posts, firebases, and sandbag walls all the time. Had a SL Officer/Engineer, 2 Engineer, 2 Riflemen, 1 Medic squad(Though it changed once in a while when we needed AT or a little more firepower) and we defended East Beach throughout the game. MEC eventually recaptured West and East Beach and we bled out, I think they had 40 tickets left and we had 113 or something when they recaptured. Just before the end the commander ordered everyone to East Beach, five squads moving up from the shore and 'nading the shit out of the base. Of course, I got run over by and APC... It's great when your on a armor heavy map with narrow passages and such, you can really set up a killing field with assets and minefields.

yep i was there to today, i was SL of squad 1 and we were at east the whole time, me and comander were always talking and we set up all sorts of stuff, we made 2 defensive lines 1 on the road north of east, it had 1 AAA, a firbase and some sandbags, plus an apc, at the base we hadd all sorts of razor wire along with a bunker, suport truck, comand post about 5 or 6 sandbag empalcements and an AAA on the hill, we kept them back for the whole round till the end, here we had around 110 ticks and they had 60 i think, so we had only one shot at taking it back, i think it was almost a full server so we brouth up 1 apc, parked in the water, and about 20 to 30 guys spawned in the water, we had about 20 ticks, they had 40 or so, we swam to the beach head with heavy resistance we stormed in blew up the apcs and spawn points and cleaned it out and took over the base with 2 ticks left, but the MEC won the round but we took back the base befor the end. it was the most i had ever seen the comander assets used since ive been playing the past 2 betas.
