Problems with two versions of PR
I currently only play v0.5 and not the "open beta." My problem is this, why are there two versions of PR out? You fellas are splitting the community and hurting yourselves by doing so. Also, isn't v0.5 an open beta anyways? After v0.6 is completed stick to only 1 "open beta" and keep the community on the same version. I've seen this tactic used by other mods and it was a contributing factor to their downfall.
Just a suggestion since I'm a big fan of this mod (Since the beginning!)

there is a open beta for .6 because with only a few testers there is no way we can test how a map will work 32 vs 32, also with 64 people on a map its alot easyer to find bugs , and theres ALOT more views on how things should work , for e.g if something had a bug or ruined gameplay that the testers missed then if there was no open beta it would go out and have a massive affect on the game intill a new download could be made , this way when .6 is done it should have less bugs and work how the devs want it to work.
hope that helps

0.5 is not an open beta it is a full release.

i see ur " the mod is always open beta" because its constantly changing ,BUT they wont change .5 anymore , so its full release. , .6 has changed ALOT so is a beta , because its constantly changing , once its fully released then it wont be changed anymore(unless something major or server side) but they will just add it to .7 , u see?

We're talking about the mod not versions of the mod. There is a problem and it's got to do with there being two PUBLIC versions of the mod.
Anymore brilliant rebuttals?

Splitting the community? Download 0.6 and you wouldn't want to go back to 0.5.
0.5 is a finished version of 0.5.
0.6RC OB is a version of 0.6 that is being polished, and after this, they will release the final version of 0.6.
If 0.5 was an OB did we officially test it?

Alright Spanish Surfer, here's your rebuttal. There is only one "official" release of Project Reality, and that is 0.5. Version 0.607 is an open beta in the sense that it does not yet replace 0.5 as the "stable" version.
There is plenty of precedent for this. The official version of phpBB forum software is 2.0.22, but there is a release candidate available for version 3.0 (Olympus). The same goes for Apache, PHP and MySQL, the software running this and other webservers around the world.
Just because the version number is "0.something" does not mean that the releases should not be considered stable and "production ready". As to splitting the community, yes to a certain extent you are right, but it is a necessary evil in order to make sure that the 0.6 release is stable enough to also be considered "production ready".
Does that help to clear things up?

I know this much with two versions of PR out it's only hurting the mod, not helping. I know this because I play v0.5 and I've seen the numbers go down. The new people playing PR are playing v0.5, get tired of having a low # of servers, and find another mod. I talked to many new guys over VOIP and they were curios why there were so few people playing. I told them the reason why and they didn't understand why PR would have two versions out either. Some of you are probably thinking "Oh, just noobs!? Who cares I'd rather not play with them," but remember without fresh bodies coming in the mod is doomed to die sooner then it has to.
Nothing wrong with beta testing PR v0.6 but keep it closed! Pass it out to 100 people and no more. Too many people are making the switch not to beta test but to play the new PR. You're hurting the community which is the mod!
Please stop arguing definition with me if you're going to rebuttal do it about the issue, two versions of PR out. PRv0.5 has it's share of problems and by definition is an open beta. Don't tell me it's not a beta because the dang thing is a VERSION 0.5
Drop the definition argument and stick to the subject.

dunno what youre dramatizing about.. get a grip man.
there like 4-5 OB servers out there ( TG, IGI, Gotland, russian1..)
who are more or less well visited with diffrent slotcount which then makes... ?
anybody?
cmon.. summarize with me now...
about 200 players who dedicate themselfs to 0.6
some R-PUB said we got a playerbase of about 1000 players.
let it rest, this has no influence whatsoever.
and I fukkin love to be involved in the developement of this mod so dont you dare try to take that away from me.

Ok, I have read through this "apparant" argument and I must say this has to be one of the most pointless threads I have ever come across.
@SpanishSurfer what are you trying to prove? all you need to know is that the mod is doing well and there is an open beta on 0.6. The community is not going to vanish just because you think so.
Just play the mod and enjoy it, stop nitpicking with people about idiotic, worthless tripe that does not need to be brought up.
I don't mean to be offensize by any means, so don't take this the wrong way.

You must either have filters set up wrong, or you play at odd times. Statistically the OB has had little to no affect on v0.5 player numbers. We still peak at around 550 players online at once every day with v0.5, so thats about 8 full 64 player servers.<<SpanishSurfer>> wrote:I know this much with two versions of PR out it's only hurting the mod, not helping. Having no releases, not even beta ones would probably actually make more people lose interest in the mod. That happens a lot with other mods - they make releases, then don't update for a long time, and people just go away. With .6 beta being out right now, people have incentive to stick with the mod through the next release and beyond.

Finding your attitude extremely annoying which is why i'm replying. They NEED to test the new version of PR to larger market, with a few 100 people it's much easier to find bugs. Nearly EVERY game nowerdays has an open beta before full release. I've played on several, for example: Supreme commander and Battlefield 2142. I also believe there is an open beta of Halo 3out right now.
I agree it splits the community. People prefer to play something new, they get bored of the same thing after a while. I got bored of .5 and was desperate to play .6 Now i can on the beta, whilst it isn't a full release. Its playable and i can help find bugs and such to make the game beta for when its official release comes. So people like you who for some reason haven't downloaded the beta will have an easier time at release and wont post whining threads about bug issues.
Cheers.
