Encourage users to read FAQ/Guide/forums more

Post by Apheirox »

I think more should be done to encourage newcomers to the mod to read the FAQ. I see a lot of players asking questions like, 'how do I use the shovel?' This is on the 0.6 beta which supposedly holds the more 'advanced' players.

I notice that the 'files' section simply links to the PR download but not the FAQ/Guide. Yes, I realize there is a link to the Guide almost right next to the files section, but still... Let us be honest - we all know how it goes: Some people are just going to download the mod and try to play it right away. Might it not be a good idea to put at least a FAQ link next to the download and perhaps even recommend reading it with the release of 0.6? I believe everybody would benefit from it: The newcomers would avoid the frustration of dying when getting in an APC that strangely refuses to move and the veterans would get less 'shovel' questions. Besides, is reading the FAQ not the perfect way to pass time while waiting for the download to finish and install?

Also, why not generally encourage players to read the guide/forums more? Surely, this could only help promote the exchange of ideas, create a stronger feeling of unity in the community and raise the level of play.

If you are a serious PR gamer do not put up with the chaotic public server gameplay! There are much betteroptionsavailable. Also, be sure to avoid making these common basic mistakes.

I like that idea. Your right Strategist, people need to read before playing. I think part of the problem is that PR is such a big step up from BF2 and most other FPS games. With your average game you can jump in learn the keys and have a good time and learn the few unique rules as you play. In PR there is so much more to know then ASDW and mouse 1-2 to play successfully

Perhaps during the install screen there could be some basic rules and information displayed. Additionally you could have the player guide luanch as soon as the game finishes installing. Don't give the option to not display it. Sure some people may just close it down but at least they will see that there is a guide with quite a bit of info to read.

During the game people could be a lot more helpful aswell. You often see a lot of new guys asking a question and they aren't likely to stay long or think the PR community is a good one if they just get responses like 'RTFM' or 'noob' etc etc.

I know it is annoying when you are trying to have a good game and someone clearly is very new to it, but a little help goes a long way.

If they are asking major questions, such as what all the commander assets do etc etc, just refer them politely to the guide here.

I remember one conversation in the chat while on the TG server:
Person 1: Read the manual.
Person 2: There's a manual?
Had a good laugh on that one but seriously we should encourage more people to read the manual and forums.

However, the problem with the manual is that there are a few things missing. During the same map on the TG server, someone asked what a triangle on the minimap was and someone replyed back with "read the manual". Well, if that person actually read the manual, they would know that there is nothing on the commander asset icons.

It does get incredibly annoying, and some people just want everything told to them, without making an effort themselves. Yesterday, I saw another guy keep asking about shovels. People actually told him that it's to build stuff, he asked for further explanation of the whole commander system. When I asked him if he seriously expected us to launch into a lengthy explanation of game mechanics every time somebody asks, he said yes.

People are just too damn lazy. They should make at least SOME effort, and not expect to be guided like little children. A lot of people don't even know their binds - I tell them to press the squad commo rose key, and they have no idea what it is. I can't tell them the exact key, cause I don't remember the defaults.

I did make a thread on this quite a while ago. Wouldn't expect it to come up in a search though :)

As you can see, a lot of people are very up for wanting people to come here. And theres plenty of solutions in there! :)

Put the link to the manual on the server graphics. Like when I play on th TG I get some sort of tactical gamer graphic as the map loads. If you could encourage servers to post urls to handy information there, everyone who played would see it.

You need to somehow get it attached inside the client. Relying on people to visit forums isn't working well enough.

I keep saying they should replace the map loading music with a track of eggman reading the guide! :D

Totally agreed, but the response to these people should be 'read the manual', not 'RTFM YOU NOOB!!!1'

About the manual needing an update: I am working on that. I just need some help making sure my info is correct.

As predicted this suggestion has become highly relevant, so without further ado a 'bump' from here.
