While (as many on this forum will know) I'm not the world's biggest M16 series fan, it does have some advantages over other systems. The straight line design, direct gas system and buffers in the stock means it has lower felt recoil than other designs (such as the AR-18 gas system) meaning that it is good (control wise) for full automatic or rapid semi-automatic fire.sekiryu wrote:The Steyr AUG has been documented to go through 750 rounds, non stop, before seizure--no cookoff though. I still don't understand why the military uses such an inferior, carbon-fouling, heat-inducing peashooter.
IMO, its an good choice for short engagements, but does have limits in the military field. However a fine law enforcement rifle (as such I cant comprehend while some LE units in the US are switching them for the HK416) where engagements are typically short and weapons can be kept surgery clean.
That rate of fire does seem rather low. 12-15 RPM is Lee-Enfield fast (for sustained fire, anyway), not something one would expect of a 5.56x45 automatic rifle.
