[Help!] Terrain

Post by Outlawz7 »

Every time, I try to generate a terrain with Terragen, only one part of the map is actually affected, surrounding terrain stays flat and the rest of the map is leveled at the highest point.

Map size is 1024x2, but Ive used the 513 thing on Terragen size, since the 1025 and higher are grayed out :?

if i where you i wouldnt use any program to generate the terrain. I only use L3DT to save me time where colour textures, detail textures, over/undergrowth are concerned.

thou i think your problem is your saving your .raw file in the wrong format, needs to be a 16bit image if i can remember right.

I dont find the BFeditor tools to be handy w/ terrain sculpting, IMO

I did save as 16-bit into the HeightmapPrimary acording to the tut in this forum (one of the stickies)

I have no experience with terragen, but did you make it the right size?

Yes and no.
I know, that it doesnt work, because the size is too small.
What I dont know, is why I cant make the terrain bigger on Terragen, since the options for higher are grayed out :|

cos its only a trial version.

so your saying you made a 513x513 heightmap, for a 1024x2 map? you need to "strech" our heightmap to a 1025x1025 heightmap image...

Dunno if its good idea to generate the terrain with program, maybe for some maps it might work but by doing all manually you can make it much better for the gameplay and more maps you make, the more realistic too. Thats what i have just recently learned.

Its not possible to make many different types of terrains due the lack of overgrowt objects but if you try really hard you will figure out some cool ways to make it realistic and fun to play as infantry/vehicle/aircraft in battlefield.

For example one way to make somekind of mountain is to raise some huge area 40-80% of the final highness, then use "random" terrain tool on the raised area and a bit over it, then smooth it, and then raise again to the final highness you want it to be, then finalize it looking realistic mountain(use some pictures from google and raising/lowering tool first on medium radius and then with smaller radius). Atleast i find this much easier way to make mountains than using only the raise/lower tool.

And for pine forest, first make the forest area non flat but still smooth by using raise tool with huge radius and low power, so there is wide but low hills, after that add the trees and after that use raise tool on very small radius (like 2-5) and small power(2-6) and randomly raise spots everywhere in the forest area (so that you use that tool on 20-40% of the forest area). Thats something i totaly randomly figured out, it looks pretty good. Adding some higher, sharper and wider big/medium/small hills here and there also makes the forest look better.

FRIJJ did it for Sunset City..I always thought, that terrain looked suspiciusly realistic than the regular BF2 'cake hills'....

btw, I got the Terragen from the tutorial link, so.....anyone got full version :D ?

Yeah, I figured, that you can make stuff with the Randomize tool, but I dont want the Ejod terrain...no offence, but its really weird now that the map is opened up in 0.6 and you have to drive over all those lil valleys and hills
