IR scope?

Post by TF6049 »

Could we have an IR scope for snipers in maps where there's a lot of dust? Allows them to see through it (but people can hide behind fires, running vehicles, molotovs, and other heat sources).

EDIT: Could there be a scope that can be picked up and added onto any weapon? :? :

Technically not possible.

I think, thermal/infrared vision on BF2 is hardcoded.

Being able to see past the map's view distance is also hardocoded.

And my personal opinion, go play Syphon Filter.

:D ;)

^^ Interesting vid.

I'm of two minds on this: yeah, it would look cool and add yet another touch of realism but I'd hate to see it on sniper rifles, even though in RL IR scopes are issued.

Half the fun of Al Fallujah is the sandstorm and the fact that anyone other than a really good sniper can't own the East & West areas of the map with too much ease.

Interesting,

But that just looks like a filter, (ie you cant see people through walls or brush).

Every time someone come up with a idea its alway hardcoded, but lots of times there is some guy who made it work, just need to search in other places then this forum ^^
(No offence to the PR team you are doing a great job)

Also, it doesn't look like something you can turn off and on, so that might make it a pain in the *** to implement.

Ummm..thats my old test vid. It wasn’t intended to be a public vid (no idea why I tagged it :p ).
Anyways.. the effect is just a modified nighvision shader. Its difficult (afaik, impossible, but I’m not a coder) to implement in any usable manner. Also it doesn’t work like real thermal sight unless you make some adjustments to textures… and adjusting textures means that each edited texture looks **** when you’re not using the sight.
In theory you could make people and hot engines to glow etc. if we could swap textures on fly but I’m afraid that’s not possible with the BF2 platform.

Vaiski, you know those hacks that n00bs use to show every player on the map as bright red/blue? Perhaps a tweaked version of that would work.

Yeah! Hax

But isn't this because the objects are transparent, not the players being able to be seen through the walls?

Heh yea well backing a wall hack with the mod might not please the PB admins :p

No idea how those hacks exactly work but I’m guessing that they force your graphics card to do things rather than hack the game engine itself. I may be wrong though.

In theory you could make static objects semi transparent and then simply make them glow in bluish colors when you’re using the thermal view (even without hacks:wink :) . That would allow you to see player models glow in yellow through walls.
However once you turn off the thermal vision, you could still see through walls… and every texture would be in different shades of grey.

Simple version that doesn’t work exactly like the real IR cameras is fairly easy to make. It would still make it somewhat easier to spot human figures.
This is how it looks without edits http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v256/ ... een514.jpg
The problem is how to control it (ask the coders! :P )

Just a note... IRL, thermal imaging doesn't allow you to see people through walls. It helps to clearly identify a vehicle or a person in front a colder background, but not through objects. Even through many type of reinforced glass you won't see them.

If you want to see some examples of RL Thermal IR imaging, I could post a few or even make some.

It would be a nightmare to code Thermal imaging in an engine not designed for it. Modeling the limited dynamic range (meaning you'd have to readjust the gain all the time and you'll get blinded by heat sources) is rather complicated.

If I had low level access to the engine, I'd have two set of textures for every objects (yes, two); the first would be the normal visible texture and the second a temperature map which would be used both as texture for IR vision and for radiant intensity calculation for the dynamic gain adjustment of the IR camera and to implement effects such as blurring and saturation.

--

Also, I like the idea suggest here. Hacks can do so many things with the engine using various kind of hooks. If something is hardcoded, why not bypass it with "legitimate" hack that's part of the mod?

OMG WAT ABOUT GUNZ IN ERASER DA MOVEI THEY SEE THREW WALS :( :( :(

I must have been thinking about Xray imaging (Does that exist?).

Please post some images!
So it's not worth the hassle then?

also if we use some sort of minihax to make IR work then it may be easier for people to use real hax and ruin it for the rest of us.

I'll have a few videos made with a FLIR camera hanging around. If I can't find them this morning, I'll post something else or grab the camera and make a few shots.

Ummm that was a little quick with posting an image with the exact hacks needed. Almost like someone had them readily available, like they used them frequently, like ..... gasp!!... they were currently hacking.... gasp!!! ;-)

All this talk about making super IR scopes for the snipers. Snipers. WTF enough with yet another addition to the snipers aresonal. People crapped all over the idea of giving them a range finder but IR scopes people try to figure out how to make it work!?!

No thanks, a regular scope is fine.

This is one solution! Except make pink and blue white, and everything else gray/black.

Also, this would not allow you to distinguish between friendlies and enemies by their uniform so you would have to make sure it wasn't a friendly nor a civvie.
