0.6 more unstable?

Post by jackal22 »

it seems to me, ok havnt played it for any greate length of time that im thrown off a server -disconected at the end/start of a new round a lot more then on 0.5

i mean ive also noticed that on for instance the tv2 server the number of disconects at the start of a new round a lot higher then there used to be with 0.5

is this just my imagination or is it to do with the new release needing ironing out or something?

With .6, compared to .5, the memory requirement is quite a bit higher. Maybe players not having enough memory swap so much they time out and loose their connection.

While I play, I usually use 2 Gb of ram.

That's really the limit for me. With less memory, I would swap a lot on every map change, which would probably cause me to lag out.

With the amount of memory I currently have, my PC lags out quite a while when exiting BF2. Same happens when I Alt-Tab.

Not for me, it was a lot smoother.

Must be your PC.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, but I have noticed many many more CTD's than with v0.5. I rarely ever saw a crash on v0.5. However, in the v0.607 open beta, I would crash to desktop after every round ended during the load into the next map. In an attempt to avoid this for the full release, I uninstalled v0.5 and v0.607 beta, and then uninstalled BF2 and deleted the old BF2 install directory to get rid of all other mods/EA junk. After reinstalling BF2 clean and patching it to the latest version, I finally installed v0.609 full release.

While I have not played the full release as much as the open beta yet, I have still experienced plenty of CTDs. While it doesn't crash at the end of every round anymore, I instead get random crashes while actually playing, which is really more annoying since I often lose my spot on a full server. Not a deal breaker, but definitely can kill the mood. When the game runs, I can run it silky smooth at nearly 40 FPS with all settings maxed.

0.6 also appears more unstable to me, same problems. But i only have 1gig ram, probably the case.

not unstable to me, but .6 sure has problems with connections / lag

even the old trick of pressing esc to prevent being disconnected wont help. also, server lag seems more pronounced?

I personally have not noticed any change in performance with my computer or connection with the final release of v0.6. Here's the specs on my machine. Not state-of-the art any more, but it works for me.

P4 3.2 Ghz
RAM 2 Gb
OS: XP Media
Video: 512 AGP
Connection: 8 mb down / 768 up

I've got quite often CTD's in the middle of a round. Never crashed on begining, tho.
Version 0.5 was fine.

The reason is just simple: crappy PC.
AMD Athlon XP 2600+, GeForce FX 5700 (128 vRAM), 2x 512 400MHz RAM's just ain't enough to play PR smoothly :-( .

No money for a new rig ATM, and upgrate is out of question - too old at all.

Gotta love the mixed responses in this thread...

Its something we're always on the look out for but unless we have testers turning in crashes which can be replicated there really isn't a ton we can do to fix it. Especially when its not crashing on the Dev comps.

Suggestion to anyone who is crashing quite a bit. Try running the game in windowed mode. When it crashes it will hopefully spit out an error that you can screenshot for us.

This has happened twice to me the whole thing locked up, screen went black and it was game over till I re-booted it.

0.5 ran fine, but finding 0.6 a pain to even get to a place I can play. Just played on an oilfield map with tanks looked great and just found you could zoom in with the target and bang screen went dead.

6800GT
AMD 3400+
1.56 GB Ram
Creative Extreme sound.

Thinking about just leaving this and going back to 0.5 and playing Muttah city my fav as it was fun I did not have to think “oh great lag” or “ this will bring the machine down soon”

Hope they fix it…..I’d hate to move away from it to another mod.

I don't know about anyone else but I tend to get CTD's a few times after installing a new build then it seems to stop, almost as though it's had a "settling-in" period.

For me 0.6 feels better in terms of FPS, I must say that maps play much smoother now..

But in terms of stability it feels worse.. When loading new maps I get lots of CTD.. (In 0.5, almost never) And as other ppl posted, I also get randomly disconnected from games. I don't get this at vBF2 or other mods like POE2.. only in PR. Al basrah wont even load.. The funny things is that I just reformatted an reinstalled my Windows.. I load maps pretty fast and get great FPS on ALL maps.. so I don't think that my hardware is lagging..

One other thing I noticed was the laggyness on Thors brigaded server, ans so did some other ppl.

My Specs:
2GB RAM
Raptor HD (loads maps pretty darn fast)
ati RAdeon X850XT
AMD 64 3500+
(play on low ping severs)

One other thing. When I installed the (ATI) catalyst drivers I picked the smaller installer without the fancy add-ons & options.. Can this be the problem? (any ATI users who can add to this?)

I can't say I remember having disconnection and CTD problems with the last beta version (the only one I tried), but with 0.6 "final" I've experienced a couple of mid-game CTDs (one of them, oddly enough, in a similar situation as sav112 - while entering the highest zoom level on a tank). However, while these CTDs have been few and random, I've experienced a ton of server reboots on both Thor's and the UK Teamwork Al Basrah insurgency server. On both servers the disconnections have occured when the map has re-loaded, and it has definitely been a server-side problem as everyone has been booted out.

I've also experienced client-end mapchange disconnections (where the server's worked just fine) on other servers, such as that Texas one (the full name of which I can't remember off the top of my head).

All in all - and as I've pointed out to others on those servers - I never had these problems with the beta. They were introduced only in the release version of 0.6.

And yes, I uninstalled 0.5 and 0.6 beta before installing 0.6 final.

i have seen alot more server crashes than with 0.5 but i havent crashed myself.

that used to happen to me in 0.5, and i found out if was a graphics card overheating, because BF pushed it alot harder than the other games i play and it was clogged up with dust.

i experianced quite a few lag problems on seven gates, and helmand. i think its something to do with the buildings on hemland yet i didnt have a problem with 0.5 >_>

i have no lag on kashan, or any of the older type maps that ive played so far. however helmand has its moments and sevengates is ridiculous in the forest area, on the mud flats its ok.

i have also seen thors and tv2 suffer major server lag, im talking fully loaded black hawks flying into the ocean on jabal and brit apcs going nuts and road killing a load of people that spawned

specs are:

256mb ati soemthing graphics card
2gb ram
+like 10 ish gb page file
sound blaster sound card

i have every thing basically set to medium apart from textures, which are high and view distance at 100%.

i dont see though how helmand was working before on 0.5 then i get 2 ctds on it yesterday =(
