Tanks a "little" to strong.
Hi There!
During the 0607 OB i played around with tanks. Normaly i played Inf. With their zooms tanks are a little overpowered i think.
Yes, Tanks Spawn Time is high..but take a look at the screenshot.
This was a 0607 Game three or four weeks ago on Qwai River. And this is not a wide, open map.
I try to play the tank a best as i can: Drive (alone) .. Zoom and Snipe Man/Apc...Never entered base territory...When taken hit, hide and repair instantly...follow orders.
This was the result oO:

They are TANKS. God, if a heavy, armored hunk of metal with a large cannon and good optics to direct that cannon at distant targets wasn't capable of striking fear into the hearts of mere infantry running around the battlefield, they'd stop making the damn things, and use damn Toyotas with .50 cals on the back instead.
Your first thought when you see a tank shouldn't be "oh.. tank.. let me get my H-AT and we'll be on our way in a minute." It should be "JESUS CHRIST IT'S A TANK!"

Tanks can be dealt with with a well organized squad and close air support. While on Kashan Desert my squad was taking the US Outpost when two M1A1 tanks and a APC came rolling in. Two well placed H-AT hits took out the tank that was close, the L-AT took out the APC with a shot to the rear, and with spotting and a quick call to the Frogfoot providing CAS the second tank was eliminated. We had NO tanks of our own in the immediate area.

Luck!
The current balance of power is the best I've ever seen. AT kits are strong too and there are so many weapons which can be used against tanks.
I played Kashan and we were attacked by 3 tanks.

Finally we managed to take them out. Their machine guns are not very accurate at distance which is OK.

But why do they lose so much damage by distance. It is 7.62! They can be very effective at 800 metres IRL
Additionly, throw a smoke grenade - IT ALWAYS WORKS IN PR and try to avoid it or flank it, no problem.

I have never seen or felt a drop in damage according to distance (is it even possible in BF2 engine?). Tanks and APCs faar away were able to kill me with few shots. Thanks Godevs that their MGs are not laser precise (in RL it would be different as I suppose).

Quwai river is the worst example to show that tanks are overpowered.
The problem with Qwui, is that when someone comes across a Tank, they try to avoid it, instead of making it a priority to destroy it to win the battle. They just hope someone else will deal with it, so they just avoid it and try to score frags. Result, loss.
With someone dedicated to tanking, with support, it can be a hugely formidable force, but since the map has been increased in size, you can use terrain to your advantage to eliminate it, aswell as the manouverability of Helicopters.
Still, in terms of ballance, i think that 3 transports and a couple of APCs Vs a small Mech colum, doesnt quite add up. Perhaps(yes, its mongol, he would suggest this) an attack AH-6(The rockect pod variant, GASP!), instead of one of the MBTs. But yes, Tanks would be that strong IRL.

The only weapon which lose damage in vbf2 are pistols. But take a look at this weapon chart. Even though it is outdated it provides still some worthy information about hand guns in mods and distances they can be fired at.Aljen wrote:I have never seen or felt a drop in damage according to distance (is it even possible in BF2 engine?). For example
G36K in poe2
damage - 35
Distance to start losing damage - 75
Distance to minimum damage - 150

I agree completely with them being to strong, when you see a tank it should make you freak out, scream to your squad members , and run for cover.
Then just spot it and call for some air support. heaven forbid we work as a team.
*Coolest moment for me with a tank in .6:
We were capping a flag, we saw a tank coming over the horizen, I let my squad memebrs know, spot it , and duck behind a building.
Next thing I hear is a loud BOOM and the building is destoryed and i'm exposed, THANKFULLY air support engaged before he was able to reload.

Tanks -should- be strong. The only reason why people in tanks can get such high kill scores (I've gotten up to 50/5 or something on Kashan), is because people aren't scared enough of them, and sometimes even fire at them with a simple rifle, for some reason. Hello? It's huge, it's virtually indestructable, and it has a nasty cannon -and- a nasty machinegun. If you're on foot and you see a tank while you don't have an engineer or H-AT kit, get some cover.

Littlebird-mounted hellfires for the win!
Failing that, grab a HAT kit and jump into the back. Works a treat
