Damn lag Spikes - Help ! Performance tips needed.

Post by =UKHC=Neoteknix »

Ok so this is my set up ... its pretty lame but most of the time it runs PR fine on the Lower Settings.

Win Xp Pro
pentium 2.8
1 gb Ram ( only have 2 slots on my motherboard, is DDR )
Radeon 9800 with a Cooler Fan

I Would really love to have a better Computer, but i cant really afford the upgrade at the moment as i have a sprog on the way !

sometimes when i defrag i get a better performance for a few days, but it doesnt last long ......... has anyone got any Tips on how to gain a better, Non Stutter Game ?

as last night the last words i heard on the Tactical gamer server were ...

" I hope your a good pilot "

And just as i took off in the little bird it all locked up ! killing me and all my team mates on board !

ARG ! i am a good pilot too, just so annoying when something like a lag spike ruins your match.

any help appreciated !

Upgrade Pentium to 4 or switch to AMD :p ;)
One more gig of RAM
Or play on Medium settings/customize them to fit the PC specs

I believe those lagspikes are a new .6 issue. not ranting or anything.
but it seems all connected get them so if you crash the passengers will understand since they were looking at the yellow letters too.
I for now dont touch helos, had to many bad moments.

If you defrag with Windows tools try out an external program like that: http://tinyurl.com/3xs4w5
Those programs are usually much better than the Windows tools.

Yeah, in 0.6 I've got more performance problems then I had in 0.5
(Athlon 2600+ @1,9, GF FX 5700 - 128 vRAM overclocked, 1 GB DDR 400MHz RAM - I know it's ****, but I'm trying to get some money for completly new rig, upgrade would be useless).

I suggest you to remove unnecesarry files by CCleaner, shut down programs, that you don't need (actually, I'm killing even explorer.exe to get + 25 MB RAM) and scan your PC with some antivirus (NOD32 Trial, Kaspersky AV trial) and antispyware (Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Terminator, Ad-Aware).

As . :| bAd|:.Ecki said, the build-in Windows defrag is not the best you can get. It's slow and not as effective.
O&O Defrag is a good choice. O&O Defrag 4 Pro is for free (it's old, but still better than the Windows one). You can download it here (registration required).

The thing is sometimes i get good rounds, and bad ...

I generally think its all to do with the start of a round.

I'm guilty of Rushing to get the choppers at the start of a map as its my favorite Duty in the game, Whether it be an attack or a Transport heli ... if you rush you get the lag, if you dont ... you get nothing and end up walking.

I dont mind changing to a foot soldier and Battling, but i have my best times as pilot.

Will have to wait till 0.7 then hehe ! :D

Believe it or not, but 1GB of RAM is pushing it a bit with PR. Another Gig stick would go along way, if you have a spare slot.

Do you have AGP? If so, get in your bios and change the settings from the amount of RAM your graphics card has and increase it. For example; you have 128MB of RAM, then increase it to 256MB. Not sure if this will do much, but I've read somewhere that the card will try to use some physical memory along with the memory the card has.

I experience performance issues also in 0.609 (don't recall having much in 0.607). I've recently turned off v-sync and I think it's running smoother than before. I have an nvidia card and used the NVidia Control Center to do this (force v-sync off, for bf2.exe). IIRC, ATI has such a thing too..? (confirm, anyone?)

And perhaps try to run Advanced Windows Care v2 to optimize your system, or TuneUp XP.

Oh yeah, and take a look at the size of your page file. Don't let Windows decide its size, you'll get lag spikes all over the place. Set the minimum size to like 3GB, maximum size 3GB too.

Post back if any of these tips helped :) . If not, just revert the settings.

I believe you.
I've read it a lot here on forums and I even got 2 other slots free, but I'm not going to buy any more of RAM - the 2 Gigs of DDR 400Mhz RAM I could just throw away from window, because for usage in a new PC (that I'll hopfully be able to buy till the end of this year) they would be too slow.

BTW: Here is a quite good optimalisation guide for BF2.

Neoteknix stated he only has two slots with I'd guess; two 512 sticks. Bummer to just toss out a gig of ram just to end up having to buy two more Gigs on top of that. I almost have the same set-up: one gig of ram, ATI 9800xt, XP Pro, although I do have an AMD 3400+ 64.

I suggest if your running high settings go to medium. I seriously have no extraordinary issues running medium settings. If your screen resolution is set higher than the native BF2 screen resolution of 1024x768, set it down to that. Also get a hardware sound card or set your on-board card down to low.

Ye, if your textures are on "high", set them to "medium". It will run smoother then.
