Tank Firing Effects (flame and dust)

Post by Mailmani »

I suppose its not possible to have different effects on the firing, depending on where you are firing at? (possibly a clone of existing tank for desert only maps, and that model has +++dusttoflyaround)

I.E. Firing tanks on desert causes shitloads of dust (check bottom of this post for links), while at, lets say, roads, or in the cities, it wouldnt cause that much dust (only minor amount).

Cause i would definetly like to see MUCH more dust flying around when you fire with the tanks, and for the added realism.

And the flames on the tanks are just way too minor... again check videos.

One big pack with couple of small avi's / mpegs (its a rar file so if you're scared of viruses, scan it :! :) http://rapidshare.com/files/45388518/TankStuff.rar.html

(Ps. Half of these videos were shot by me. The other half was shot by a mate of mine.)

We had a really big smoke effect in 0.5, the problem was that you could not see through it after firing and therefore never knew where your shot went.
"Dynamic" dust can't be done with the BF2 engine I fear...
btw. welcome to the forums.

It's still there when looking at it 3rd person. You just can't see it from inside the tank.

Actually, when you are firing with a tank (imma tank gunner, hence the videos), you dont see where the shots land at, unless youre quite far (+2km).

But bigger flame would be a definite bonus for em =)

Aren't tank gunners required to yell "obscuration obscuration obscuration" to notify the TC?

BTW that's some huge *** muzzle flashes!

tank gunners usually tell other tank gunners where their shots land at (atleast in the FDF, dunno about other countries)

still, bigger muzzle flash is required!

In the early shots of BF2 there was a cool ripple effect that would appear around the tank when a shot was fired. it was both cool and realistic. IE we had this in COD3 as well. It made the sight of a tank shooting it's main gun a sight to behold. Sadly DICE ripped this cool effect out of the final game I can show you some shots if you need a reference:

Here is another shot:

IMHO this is all the tank needs right now. That and if we could slow down the muzzle flash of the main gun it would help and you would not need the huge dust cloud from PR.

Also the smoke from buring vehicles needs to be black not this gray color we have now. Another thing that would be nice is too change the missile trails to not be perfictly stright all the time. IE COD4 has this nailed. It would rock to have it be kind of wavy and last longer in the air. Not more than 4 seconds though to help keep the performace up for low end PCs.

Yeah, atleast the sounds rock now. Hearing a tank battle going on on Kashan while you're running from cover to cover inbetween the Bunkers rocks.

Agreed, the POE tank effects rock. I love watching the unburnt powder slowly being sucked outa the barrel and igniteing it looks cool.

The fire and loading sound effects are good too.

PR deffinatly needs to make tank effects more awe inspireing, I wanna just stare and say holy shit when a tank fires off by me in game. I use to love going to our air show and watching them fire off the leopards, the muzzle flash was about the size of a small car and the bang would make you wanna cough because it rattled your insides so bad.

Another thing that might help is to make the Tanks/APCs shake the screen as they pass by. IE would help give the impression that these vehicles on the battle field are not to be taken lightly.
