Or ... he could just play any other FPS and have a quick look on the last page of the manual that tells him how to instaprone?

Meh, just play a SP so it gives him the help messages, since some basics are from BF2 (SL commanding, Caps Lock screen etc..)

Argh - where is that "Manual in 60 seconds" thread? Just link that in here. Pat him on the back and send him in. I never bothered with vBF2!?

With PR, not something you learn in BF2.
God, even BF2 has a manual (opened my DVD box the other day :p )

Well, I skipped BF2. No problem.
And it ain't that complicated now. Just lay of the H-AT, support, sniper, grenadear, marksman etc etc - spawn in on SL - good to go.

I say go for PR, not vBF2. You don't want that, really :o . Ye, only if you want to know the difference, but I suggest you first get used to PR :p . Then you can play vBF2 for 5 minutes, just to spit it out again :D .

The disclaimer saying that this mod is hard to learn is more aimed at the regular BF2 guys. Once you get used to how BF2 works, thats when it gets hard to "unlearn". Just dive right in at PR. Type or just admit it on VOIP that you are new. If they are harsh or just plain smacktards, leave the squad. Join another.

Not sure where you are from, but just say where and what servers gives you the best ping and we will give you tips on what server to play on. Where you can be completely green and still get help.

I never bothered with BF2, I went straight to PR.
Right, I just got back from the store and BF2 is installing as I write this. I think I'll play vanilla for a few days at least. When I'm done with that, I'll play SP PR for a day or two (are there bots available? ^^) to get the hang of it. I live in Sweden, so any European server should do, but tips about good ones would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who have replied!

Thor's Brigade is a good server from Germany, usually a lot of people on there.

I don't think vanilla BF2 is nearly as bad as people are making out.

I racked up a little over 525 hours in it, and I had some of the greatest gaming moments of my life, so don't think it's not possible to have a good time with it.

The difference is that it can be frustrating with the serious lack of teamwork (though Infantry Only servers tend to be better with this - but personally I never play IO), and weapons that don't seem to kill what you fire at.

I'd definitely play vBF2 first, if only to get used to the engine and feel of the game. I consider myself to be a pretty good vBF2 player, and after only a couple of days playing PR I'm coming first in my team ahead of Colonels and Generals and stuff, so don't underestimate the experience to be gained from playing vanilla BF2.

The biggest difference in PR is that most people try hard to work together to achieve a goal, which is very good, but I still say you should get familiar with vBF2 first.

Oh, and by the way, you're almost certainly going to get slaughtered in your first few days of BF2. Try not to worry about it too much, it's inevitable. Seeing newbies in the enemy team is free kills as far as most vets are concerned. You'll get the hang of it soon enough.

Being familiar with FPS games in general is about as important as being familiar with BF2. I sometimes watch people who play a fps for the first time...walk a bit past a corner. stop. turn to your left. start walking again. ;)

You just have to get used to how to keep track of tons of things at once. Strike of Karkand might not feel like PR, but it is a good map for that.

I've played tons of FPS games and tactical shooters before, so I know how to take care of myself ;)

I only want to get the hang of BF2 before I start with PRM, so that I don't piss all the veterans off with my "newbieness".

Id say yes..., play vbf2 for a week, then switch to PR.

If only for the reason that youll really appreciate how good this mod is compared to vbf2.

I used to play both.., but to tell you the truth vbf2 bores the crapola outa me now, i cant play for more than 1/2 an hour without getting stressed out with it.

In the PR .6 beta testing, i played ( like many others ) LOTS of 4 hour rounds and loved EVERY minute of it and still do with the final release. Surely that says something?

Quote from ArmA forums says it all.
"Arma 2 has a very lucky dev team, who have a very patient community, who will always stay loyal in the faith that one day arma 2 will be complete.
Flashpoint has a weeks worth of out the box gameplay, after that it's boring. "

Good to know, Bosco ;) I still think that I'd better play a little vBF2 first, though. A little experience with the game doesn't hurt :)

Vanilla will only teach you bad habits dude. There's really no need to waste your time with it. Just read the manual that's packaged with PR, read your vBF2 manual, and then hop right in. Squad up, and just do what your squad leader tells you to do.
