SADS Acoustics Sniper/Small Arms Detector

Post by phyte »

This might be a cool system to implement on one of the vehicles you are adding. It gives the direction and elevation of incoming sniper and small arms fire (Not the exact location). It would also be possible for a sniper to ID the SADS antenna, and realise that firing in the vacinity of the SADS will compromise his current position. The effective range of the SADS would have to be scaled for certain maps. It is also man portable (embedded antenna in the helmet of a soldier) but I would imagine that it would impact a soldiers mobility and more importantly might negatively impact game play, so might just be better on a vehicle.

The displayed information doesn't show an exact location, rather a circle with lines indicating the direction, and text indicating the elevation. However, it can automatically slew a turret to the target location estimation.

Anyways, just an idea.

There is some interesting data on the following site:

I was thinking a little about this. What if you used the 'Spotted' functionality of the game so that SADS equipped vehicles can auto-spot a Sniper that fires his weapon within a certain radius of the SADS equipped vehicle?

The sniper would still be useful as a scout when in the vacinity of a SADS equipped vehicle, but would have to be careful not to fire around these vehicles. I am not sure how difficult this would be to code? Or if it would ruin the game? I should download the SDK and check it out. (I hate python though :( )
