Smoke: Overuse/Misuse
I've been running into more and more situations were a squad or several squads are moving in on an enemy held control point and for some god awful reason, someone always thinks it is a good idea to smoke the objective before moving in to take it.
What's wrong with this picture? I'll tell you.
You may be preventing the enemy's ability to see you and your squad move in, but did you also realize that it obscures your vision too?
This is one of the worst non-tactical moves anyone can make. This ends up in TKs, and over all chaos because no one can really see anything. It "benefits" the enemy as much as it "benefits" the attacking squad. This is why this "tactic" is not used IRL. Its not a smart move by any stretch of the imagination.
I've seen the same thing done when an enemy is attacking a base a squad is holding.
"Hey, lets smoke our own CP so the enemy can't see to shoot us."
Hey you! Rocket scientist! Brilliant move! Now you can't see the enemy who is now moving into the cap zone and killing off your squad.
Why do so many people think this is a good tactic? Perhaps I'M missing something brilliant here?
Let me know something.

I know what you mean, and I've asked myself these questions several times.
Smoke is used to conceal movement when under fire. Its NOT used when entering enemy CP or buildings. Use Flashbangs, thats what they're in the game for.
There are a few situations, when smoking your own position could be useful, e.g. when under sniperfire at flag and you cannot spot him/shoot him. But even then, if you have the slightest idea where he is, throw the smoke there, not on your own head.
One tactic involving smoke I like is, if you attack an objective, suppress them with LMG, throw smoke inside/at them, leave the LMG and a rifleman (nade spamming) for suppressive fire and flank them in the meantime - do not enter until the smoke is gone!

Scenario: my sqaud is in the basement of the mine on qwai river, we have killed all the enemy and taken the position.
Squad 5 decides its a great idea to come down and join us, brining with him his merry band of specops. while they are coming down they start throwing smoke grenades everywhere, and then seeing as how we were already down there, they promptly leave.
as soon as they walk out the front door they are massacred, and then the enemy come INTO the mine without us knowing cause we cant see a godamn thing. Bad things happen, and we barely kill all the enemy, suffering heavy causlties
Yea this happens all the time to me
I usually use smoke when:
A) my squad is loosing the firefight and we have wounded troops that need medics
B) we are exposed and armor is in bound to our location
C) we are pulling out of an area/firefight and need to move quickly
D) need to blind a hardened enemy position so we can get AT/grenades into it.

I've started to use smokenades in something a call the rabbit-gambit. My squad stands by to attack S, I'm North. When we are all ready - I toss smokegrenades in every direction, throw my fielddressings to the grown and fire wildly everywhere, while comrose ENEMY SPOTTED Then I run like hell further North, hopefully with the entire hostile army after me. It actually works.
I'm a naughty naughty wabbit ...

Yesterday on AoM as Milita: I'm in the top west bunker with the Mosin, engaging oncoming brits.
Some idiot from my team decides to drop smoke inside the bunker.
I get pissed, but dont take action.
A few minutes later, hes standing beside me, he does it again while I'm aiming.
Needless to say I shot him in the face.

Random smoke as well as surprise grenade lobing in advance of a CQ assault have been irritating problems since the Counter Strike days. Besides the confusion and TK's they also alert the enemy of your eminent approach.
Smoke for BF2/PR should only be used as a smoke-screen. Crossing roadways, aid to medics against menacing snipers, to give cover from and to confuse approaching armour.
If used in a more creative way though, one man can take out an entire squad with smoke. Such as attracting and luring the enemy via smoke to a kill box (with explosives set and then mopping the survivors up after), or making them think your assaulting in the direction the smoke is coming from. Then hitting them hard while their backs are turned looking in the direction of the smoke. All time tested old school CS tactics.

People are really drawn to smoke in PR. Usually I'll throw smoke in the OPPOSITE direction of where I'm going b/c players are so curious that there's smoke, they get tunnel vision admiring it.
Or like the poster above mentioned; throw some smoke into a kill-box and wait. Some players are so fascinated by smoke they'll advance toward it and right into it to figure out what's going on. Then nade-spam the mess of 'em.

For PR I play exclusively on Tactical Gamer server as "vanity11"
For ArmA I play exclusively on Tactical Gamer (coop and evo) as "Vanity"
