Has anyone considered approaching DICE directly?

Is how I think that should have gone...Spartan452 wrote:EA is trying to be more like valve, take a look at EA downloader and steam, maybe they will buy up the PR team, then fire them and put their own representatives behind the name of PR!!
fucking EA ********, SPARTAAAAAAA!!!!!!
Ok continue with you're ideas of taking over EA by buying 100 shares 1% at preferably 50 dollars apiece.

This is not true. The publisher holds the rights to the name of the game, etc but the source code (BF2 Engine and BF2 application) is property of DICE. Its like what happened with BIS and Codemasters. BIS has the code for Operation Flashpoint, but because of legal stuff (Codemasters hold the rights to the name) they couldnt call it OFP2. So they changed the name and continued to use their own code. AFAIK, its the same between EA and DICE.BlakeJr wrote:EA has bought DICE so the BF2 engine belongs to EA. In fact I think EA bought the engine before they actually bought DICE.
Anyways, comercial licenses are NOT free. A license for CryEngine 2 is $50,000+ just to say something. The BF2 Engine is good. The fact that not many 'features' of it are exposed for use to use is another story... and a sad one I must add.

Time and patience, the two things the Dev team needs the most to make a good mod.Alex6714 wrote:I think it would be good to try, I mean, what can you lose by asking?

I'll call them for you guys and see what I can do (DICE).
EDIT: I sent the following email to DICE. Their number is a Swedish number, and as such I'm sure the charge on it would be HUGE if I where to call it. This letter is a basic outline and I didn't want to sound too businessy :-/
------------------------
To Developers at DICE:
I am a member of the community surrounding the popular Battlefield 2 mod "Project Reality" (http://www.realitymod.com). The mod has been in progress since before Battlefield 2 made the world market. The developers have put a large amount of time and effort into the game, and a good portion of our community is made up of people who bought Battlefield 2 solely to play Project Reality.
There are, however, many issues the developers are having. The biggest one is a lack of source code, and the fact that many good features cannot be added via scripting without access to said source code. While we do not desire to simply "have" the code, we do wonder if DICE is willing do do a license for the engine, and if so, what the cost of such a license would be?
Respectfully,

I want to see what the response for that email is going to be.

This is a moot point anyway because EA has, de facto, bought DICE. DICE is no more. DICE = EA now.[R-DEV]Ghostrider wrote:This is not true. This, in turn, means that the rights to the engine belongs to EA.
Edit:
In the case of BIS vs Codemasters or what we should call it, the difference between them and EA/DICE is that BIS has continued on as an independent game producer while DICE now builds game under the name EA.
