Old Maps need the Old Yeller treatment
Maybe i'm completely alone in this but i feel like there are several maps in PR right now that were made for older versions, and now, with all the great changes with 0.5 and 0.6, are not nearly as fun as the others.
I think that they should either be taken out completely or reworked. I realize that the devs and map makers have limited time on their hands and probably have better things to do, but if that is the case then they should be taken out for now.
Its hard enough finding a good, populated, low-ping server to play on these days without having to keep suffering through some very sub par maps before getting to the great stuff (a.k.a, Kashan, Jabal, Al Basrah, Qwai, etc.)
For example:
(sorry if i offend you by bashing a map you like but this is how i honestly feel)
Desert Storm - What is up with this one?? Seriously? AFAIK its the only map in PR
that actually has the flags all lined in a horrible linear fashion. This means no defending multiple points, no balanced offense, no large scale strategy, just everyone rushing to the frontline. It's made worse by the sand storm that often reduces everything to a giant, teamkilling, grenade-spamming, clusterf*ck. I have yet to have a good round on this map. It might not bother me so much but it seems like this map is ALWAYS in rotation on every server. Sometimes played twice.
Operation Ghost Train - Sadly this map could be great but as it is now i find myself reaching for the disconnect button faster then Vikingo can say "use the search function." This map has the space to be big enough but as it is 70% of that space is wasted because there are no CPs in the area. The bridge area is the biggest culprit i think. Because of the opposing CPs of each side this area often turns into a snipers paradise. Another road (or bridge) away from the main bridge that vehicles can cross would help greatly.
Operation Pheonix - Don't get me wrong, i really really like this maps layout, design, and style. But it just need to be much bigger. People have been talking about a huge Jabal or Basrah sized city map, and i think this one would do very very well, but it just needs more breathing room in between the CPs and spawns.
I know i will probably get some flak for this one but....
Ejod Desert - I always hear people say they love this map. I think the reason is because once both teams get an APC or another spawn point next to the city, it becomes the closest thing to vBF2 in PR i have seen. The giant city chokepoint is IMO the weakest part of the map. Once one side gets pushed out of the city 95% of the time you may as well call the round right there. With only 1 option of a CP to take from the main bases, to the outskirts (gas station and gardens), to the edge of the city, there are no tactical or command decisions to be made. The giant ridges on the sides dont really help the situation either, as tanks and snipers will often just park themselves up there and blast anything that exits the enemies main. Something needs to be done with this map, maybe expand that city, or maybe space out more CPs so its not so much in a straight line from one main to the other.
So if you agree, disagree, or just want to tell me to f*ck off, let me know what you think.

You obviously haven't paid much attention on Ghost Train.

Phoenix has got a bit tiny now
But I agree on Ejod, isn this map as old as Jabal?
0.5 it was nade and prone spam and of course Heavy AT sniping entire platoons, 0.6 everything is about around the city, not in it...
Suggest, that the city is expanded, a bit to the south and west of West City and north on hill from East.
And the West and East CPs moved a bit further in their respective directions, so we can have enough room for RPs...

Ghost train needs some tweaking but it's not as bad as you paint it.
I never liked EJOD but I like it more now and it does favor speed and goon rush tactics but I think it should remain.
Desert Storm is not in rotation on many servers and we are told it will be dropped next release.
Phoenix I really haven't played much in .6 and when I have it usually wasn't a good experience but I don't think that is the map as much as the players.
I'm waiting for Muttrah 2.

Very very glad to hear that Desert Storm is going to be dropped.
@Expendable: TBH I didn't realize Ghost Train had been changed, i'll have to give it a try as i've been avoiding it so far for 0.6
@Longbow: Have you really had good, tactical matches on Op Pheonix, Desert Storm, and Ejod? And why exactly do you want Basrah dropped? Because its popular? Its by far the best Insurgent map and and the insurgency game mode is brilliant. Allows for great strategy.
@AD&A: Like i said, maybe i was a bit harsh on Ghost Train. But i swear to god, every server i play that goes through more then 2 or 3 maps always hits Desert Storm. Thats usually about the time i leave said server. But i suppose its a non issue if its being dropped.
Glad to see i'm not the only one who dislikes Ejod.

I don't like Desert Storm , and yes , I had very good rounds on Op.Phoenix , OGT & EJOD .Soulis6 wrote: @Longbow: Have you really had good, tactical matches on Op Pheonix, Desert Storm, and Ejod?
Because this mod isn't called 'Project Al Basrah' . Now I see every 2nd server running it . I'm bored to death by this map .Soulis6 wrote:And why exactly do you want Basrah dropped? Because its popular?

AFAIK the only thing that changed was the doors in Tunnel. The three bridges have been there the whole time.Soulis6 wrote: @Expendable: TBH I didn't realize Ghost Train had been changed, i'll have to give it a try as i've been avoiding it so far for 0.6

Yeah.... OGT has (if I recall corectly) always had three crossings... people just doesnt look hard enough for them, and this give the players who know this map a huge advantage...
Anthony Lloyd, himself a former soldier in the British army and a Northern Ireland and Gulf War veteran:
"The men inside (the APC) might have been UN but they were playing by a completely different set of rules. They were Swedes; in terms of individual intelligence, integrity and single-mindedness I was to find them among the most impressive soldiers I had ever encountered. In Vares their moment had come."

I wouldn't mind seeing EJOD "expanded" with a larger city. There is alot of space to use. Not to mention it would allow us to further space the flags, and make it much easier to set rally points down within the city.
Nothing wrong with Ghost Train if you ask me. The only thing that should be removed are the choppers, this is due to the lack of clearings to drop troops off, the jungle is just far too dense.
Desert Storm will be removed, so no need to worry.
I haven't even played Op. Phoenix since 0.6 came out. I guess it could be removed, or expanded preferably.

Personally I don't find the big maps like Kashan, Kufrah Oilfields any much fun. (I've had fun in a tank on Kufrah but that's it.) It's certainly not the PR I got really into in 0.3 and 0.4.
Traveling long distances, long wait times between firefights, firefights across vast distances... that's not why I started playing PR.

Maps that I dont think should return:
Desert Storm - no more needs to be said about this.
Helmand Province - too spammy especially when played on 64 player servers (which it often is). Insurgents on AAS just shoudlnt be IMO.
Operation Phoenix - Too small and vanilla layout.
Raid on Moskiye - overgrowth problem screws the whole map over unfortunately.
Street - too simplistic even for small games IMO
as for EJOD - I really like the gameplay now, the ridgelines are very important to hold, you can build firebases up there... its got a great mix of urban combat and ranged desert combat! Agree that it could use expanding but youd have to convince thomazz to return to the map.

OGT: great if you play it right (sneaky ******* ambush
) and know the map layout.
Fallujah/Desert Storm: I've got over it and yes; it's too linear.
Ejod: agreed re the map benefiting from SW & NE city expansion (but not too much).
Kufrah: haven't totally found the groove for this map yet but there's something about it......
Raid on Moskiye: I like: ambush central, just like OGT. You shit your undies when you bump into an enemy squad and then the firefights are furious.
Helmand Province: it's like playing Cowboys & Indians when I was a kid (apology if this term seems derogatory to any Native American players). Not one of my favourites.
Kufrah Oilfields: I like this map. A combination of an armour squad supported by - and supporting - an infantry squad can sweep through the opposition with tremendous effect; however this can be countered with similar tactics from the other side.
New maps are always good to play & explore and I'm looking forward to seeing what Muttrah2 has to offer.
