If you actually think CLASSIFIED information can end up in a video game then I would say you are not qualified to offer a credible opinion on the subject. Go join the military, get a job that requires a security clearance and, if you are cleared, silently chew on your foot while reading the post I am responding to.BeerHunter wrote:Well not really these days as games try to model the actual performance of vehicles and weapons more and more.
Hypothetical conversation in a game...
Taliban player : "WTFl , how the hell did he blow up the LAV with that."
Reg Army Player : " Yea - no way - but the newer model has 4" plate armour under it. Idiots never did strengthen the side plate though."
And there goes classified information..
You can pick up the specs and performances of just about any weapon using the net and people are more than willing to expound their knowledge in lively debates discussing ranges , sighting systems , limitations , muzzle velocities , speeds..name it and you can start a conversation about it.
Think the enemies aren't intelligent enough to figure this out and use it?
Think they are simply trying to ensure that British Army Reg's and reserves don't get caught up in the BS and inadvertently reveal classified info.
Typical politicians reaction though isn't it.
Don't like something , introduce a law making it illegal then let someone else worry about enforcing it.
Gonna be basically unenforceable.

I don't know if you read the entire post or merely skimmed it before drawing your conclusion regarding my credibility to offer an opinion.Boostedstr8six wrote:If you actually think CLASSIFIED information can end up in a video game then I would say you are not qualified to offer a credible opinion on the subject. I merely mentioned that more and more video games based on the current military are trying to model the performance of weapons systems more accurately , even to the point of actually incorporating some of the specs of the weapons in the game.
I never said that any enemies of a state could obtain classified information FROM a game itself , but could garner information through "casual" conversations with active military personnel while playing or chatting.
I could cite numerous hypothetical occurrences in which classified could inadvertently be revealed. In retrospect I suppose "classified" is not the best word and probably should be replaced with "confidential".
I will say that I doubt very much any active enemy would be that interested in the inner workings , schematics and source code of , for example ,a targeting system (which would be classified) , but a trained operator might inadvertently reveal some of the characteristics of the system in casual conversation , that could enlighten the foe.
But in closing I agree that it is a knee jerk reaction and will end up being basically unenforceable. I was simply trying to justify the reasoning behind the pending legislation.
Oh and BTW - see you're new to the forums and PRM (as am I) so welcome aboard. I'm finding PRM to be what I've been looking for in a FPS game for years. Like the organization and team work and enough realism to satisfy my needs without the ear plugs , headaches and dust. (20 minutes boredom occupying a targeted objective then 10 minutes of all hell breaking lose trying to hold it.
