I wouldn't mind If the minimap was taken out of the game - why have no ammocount, crosshair, e.g. but a freakin minimap with an ugly design on screen using space I'd rather have 4 view.
I've set my map (the one on the "m" key) to 30% so it's more than transparent. If I'm looking for something on the map (like when I'm looking for the LZ my SL pointed out while flying in the BL) I can still see what's happening.

And ask yourself when do you need to use c4 or slams ?
In anti-personal combat? I have seen some SF guys to use Slams at corners and in a similar ways but mostly they are (and they should be) used against vehicles and com. assets - not on some random place in wilderness (urban or natural).
In a squad it is easy to communicate with your squad members - and shout on them like you proposed.
I believe that just like we learned to shout at APC driver "Bail out" to stop and prevent our own kidnapping we can use the same shout to say others to rush away from enemy Bunker or other vital asset which is going to blow up.
When I see someone running away from enemy bunker and shouting I do not go inside (if I am not in battle frenzy with my saw)

Welllll...l|Bubba|l wrote:It may surprise you but there are 3 other maps apart from the mini-map.
Spawn-map, Big-map and the over all very useful squad-map.
The Spawn-map isn't an awful lot of use from a tactical point of view, unless you are about to respawn and are - therefore - dead; the "Big-map" is useful and is what I tend to use as squad leader, but I must admit to being a little bit surprised by the "squad map".
What is this "squad-map" of which you are speaking ... of?

On my machine that is functionally identical to the "Big Map" that Bubba was talking about. Unless I am completely missing the point here.
What with this and the "bullet drop" thread I am beginning to get the impression that I am having a "stupid" day...

It's the map where you create or join your squad.Red Halibut wrote:Welllll...

It's shows you a list of your squadmembers and there kits. You can click on a single (or more) name to see where he is or click on a guy on the map to see his name. This is also possible for the other squads of you team to see how well they doing and if they could use some help.
You can zoom everywhere on this map unlike the Big-map were you only zoom on your position.
And dosen't forget, this is the only map were you can give orders directly on the map.

Well fsck me sideways!! I've been using all those maps, I just never referred to them by those names, and I didn't realise there was a difference between the "big map" and the "squad map".
Thank you Gentlemen! I have learned something new today, and as they say you should learn something new every day then I shall consider that box on my to-do list ticked. Of course, it won't change my gaming style at all, but at least I will now know what map I am actually using.

I actually do need the markers to disable mines. For example, on Qwai, our squad leader was in an APC and he said there was a mine in the middle of the road but I didn't see it (known bug that mines disappear). I told him to put down a marker on it and I was supposedly wrenching it but I didn't see the wrench animation but my squad leader did and the mine was off the road.

i use the 3D map as a squad leader often to 'point out' enemies and direct my squads fire
'Fire on my attack command!' and they can see where im talking about by placing the attack command. yes it can be abused when combining itwith Q-spot spamming (the act of continously spotting for enemies in hopes of getting a lucky spot) and then placing the attack command directly on the enemy using capslock map. This I find is more of a problem with Q-spot spam than it is the 3D map though.
Personally I think the 3D map is excellent now. It only shows flags under 150 meters, and other than that it only shows mines and SL orders.
Id like to see a few more things removed (destroyed bridge/artillery/vehicle drop/supply drop/squad member roles inside vehicles/a few others) but other than that I dont think its obtrusive at all!
And the great thing about it is that unlike the minimap, it can be flipped on and off at the touch of a button!
The number one issue I had with the 3D map was all the flags cluttering up the screen, but now that thats been scaled back drastically its not bad at all i find...
the minimap on the other hand... lol wont open that can of worms

The markers are a great way of simulating saying something like "look over there" or "shoot that guy" and pointing with your hand. In real life that is a 1 second thing, but since we don't have something like that in-game you will have to describe the target: "shoot the guy by the third building from the left on the second window".
Not saying the second option is wrong, but pointing stuff out in real life is pretty common and the markers are a good simulation for that. You don't even need to have it on all the time. Usually when fuzzhead deploys the marker, I put it on, reposition to the check the target, and turn it off.

I dont need it, but it sure helps to coordinate the squad. Since you can never have the same situational awareness in a game as you would IRL, things like the 3D map is necessary if you want good teamwork and coordination on public servers.

the only time i ever use it is to check distance for an RP. in that respect, it is VERY handy. no reason to remove it because it can be turned off in one second.

Re: Do you need 3D map? (with poll)
The reason why 3d markers exist is to take the place of SL physical direction (e.g. pointing). It also helps a lot when trying to deploy those finicky assets.
