New players etiquette and suggestions for new “inductees”.

Post by BeerHunter »

Yay! New PRM players seem to have come to the forefront lately with a lot of emphasis on how to treat them. FINALY!

I consider myself a newbie with only about 12 hrs of on line game play under my belt and there is quit a bit to learn yet before I would consider my self very proficient in all aspects of PRM.

PRM isn’t exactly rocket science and is easy enough to play BUT if you’re striving for realism, a sense of immersion and want to be a SUPERIOR SL or commander, as in the real military, you have to know and understand the SL/Commander features , the various roles, abilities and limitations of each class so they can be deployed and utilized effectively, as well as how to take and give orders This is what takes time to learn.

The PRM crew is proposing an excellent training session that's geared towards learning aspects of PRM (which unfortunately I might not be able to attend) Also,if you’re new , want some help or simply curious about aspects of the game read on.

First and foremost, when you join a squad, proudly announce to the SL you are new. I’ve done this on TG’s server and just about EVERY SL has been VERY understanding, informative and helpful. Even organized a small training session over at TG’s which I attended and learnt a lot.

Secondly, there is a manual available that’s a good read and points out some aspects of the game even veteran players were surprised to find out.

Thirdly, there is a SP mode available where you can play around with ANYTHING you want and no one cares. You can adjust the spawn times so you don’t have to wait the 30+ seconds if you make a foolish mistake, fire up ANY asset you want and give it a whirl , practice basic SL , commander functions etc. etc.

And the SP mode is simply just plain FUN to play as there’s no pressure and a great way to let of some steam , blow tings up and have a ball for a few minutes.

So , if you’re new to PRM and bothered reading all this..a big hearty WELCOME and don’t be afraid to announce your new. No one should be judging you and the vast majority of decent PRM players (the type you’d WANT to learn from) are more than willing to help and quit often go out of their way to explain things. (kinda makes them feel superior ;) :D ).

Only for gawds sake , don’t ask “where’s my cross hairs”. :p

Have a good day all.

Thank you for this post Beerhunter - it's exactly my point of view.
New players should:
- at least take a look into the desktop mini manual - takes about 2 minutes time to read through - I don't want you to learn the whole wiki
- if you have a question ask friendly and polite i.e. not like "Z0MG wherez da leet snipa rifle?????!!"
- please don't use the above mentioned leet-speak too much...posting rofl, lol, newb and things like this all the time doesn't make you any better or cooler than others
- and for the love of god don't ask where's my crosshair when the mods name is "Project REALITY"

Other than that I have no problems with new players and like to help them if they act like normal people :D

This is something I have to remind myself....usually just after I've been TK'd by what I assume to be a newer player.

Yes, there is a difference between a new player and a noob. A noob is one who refuses to learn from experienced players and just sits back spouting off about all the things they don't like about the game features and refuse to play as a teammember or use the equiptment as intended. These guys need to take their stupidity somewhere where its actually considered a skill.

Now on the flip side, I've seen alot of arrogant, rude and generally unfriendly behavior from players who, insist on being dicks....for whatever reason. I don't know if they're on a perpetual period or if they're just trying to establish their place in the pecking order of online gaming by putting "noobs' in their place and thus letting everyone else know how "important" they are. Whatever the reason, it shows unneccesary negativity and represents the community very poorly to new players.

"RTFM noob!' is not a good approach to helping a new player learn because the manual will only give you the basic mechanics of many of the game features. Actually putting it into practice is a different ballgame all together and can raise many more questions than can be answered by the manual.

Keep in mind, that when you first started playing PR, you were not an expert within the first couple of weeks and if you HAVE been playing PR for a while, you'll know that it has become more complex than it was for the first few releases (I know I was there for many of the very early releases.) Cut these people a little slack for christ's sake! Show some respect. Alot of these people come from games you openly despise (like vBF2) and are willing to give PR an honest try. Instead of ripping them a new one when they ask a question that seems obvious to you, be helpful. You cannot expect this community to grow when you insist on being an *** to the new players. I'd rather play on a server full of new players than a server full of ********, running around feeling self important because they are "experts' at playing PR.

The funny thing is that people who are the dicks in this community are the first ones to start whining when someone says something sideways to them. Get over yourselves and stop trying to be internet tough guys and show a little compassion to new players. You were new at one time also.

*DAMN, I'm long winded!*

Also, asking the questions...
"Why can't my tank/APC/Airplane/Helocopter move?"

And...

"What are the shovels for?"

Is generally a moment that a new member will be "RTFMed."

Maybe make one text file on the desktop that say "READ THIS OR YOU WILL BE RTFMed!" in big capital letters.

Well I don't know if it's possible, but actual games with loading screens have 'random/changing' tips. If possible with some sort of randomization on load screens(load screen "randomization" permitted + map maker's permission), add tips and maybe random trivia bout PR?

Stuff such as:
Shovels are used for building commander assets.
RPs came around v.4
Sigless.
