screen capture software

Post by vibes »

hey guys n gals,

i want to capture video both in game and out. fraps does a good enough job in game, but won't work on the desktop (i ask because i want to make a how-to movie for voip fixes). i have snagit at work but i'm greatly underwhelmed by the quality of the recording (16 bit colour). so, my question is, is there a good (preferably free or cheap) piece of screen capture software out there?

*note - i was unsure whether to put this in general or help n hardware. if it should be moved, by all means move it o mighty mods :p

Captivate works from Macromedia-Adobe.

btw you could just take screenshots yourself using windows. I think its Cntr-Shift-PrintScreen.....or alt-crtl-shift-printscreen. I just hit them all, it'll copy your open window or desktop (depending on key combo) and place it in your clipboard. Then just copy it to some software, word or whatever and make your guide.

Yep a guide with screenshots is better!

video tutorials tend to work better and are more popular than text/image tutorials, from what I've seen. Depends how complex the thing is though.

it's not really very complex fixes, plus in vista i can set the dpi to high for big fonts so it should be viewable on youtube. it's one of those things that in text is incomprihensible but on video would be easy peasy to explain. i've run into this problem before making training material for work, but of course i can't download software to my computer *gasp!* *shock!* *horror!* *unauthorised software! unclean! unclean!* so i ended up doing screenshots and a powerpoint presentation, which frankly sucked. I would love to run training with videos of what to do

if you want to be really basic, you can hit print screen and paste it in paint, or word, or whatever. heh, maybe i should make a powerpoint presentation to guarantee yawn factor :p

p.s. - try photoshopping screenshots of photoshop. it will mess up your mind :D

NOT tested while in game but I use these at work:
Screen shot: mwsnap http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html
multi formats, auto rename, snap straight to printer, etc. FREE
Edit: the hotkeys with auto-save makes it very fast to create tutorials have to see if it works in PR...

Screen audio/video capture: http://screenplay.huelix.com/ $40 U.S.
