Yeah, I have tested the circle some more and it seems to be extremly sensitive, I still dont see the point of standing completely still in mid air since even when you are firing the canon on the attack choppers you should slowly drift in some direction to avoid HATs and tank shells.

I forgot to thank Red Halibut earlier for clearing this out, that circle has been terrorizing be since vanilla.

Its a simulated HALO drop. Which happen IRL with spec ops. Go into enemy territory drop troops from 500m + leave. Now you have spec ops behind enemy lines.
Shouldn't be dropping people anywhere near a HAT kit in the first place!

HALO drops would involve 'chutes, which are modelled in-game but aren't attached to any players (yes, except the pilot) because we don't have airborne infantry... so technically simulating it is a bit cheeky lol. I don't care either way - I've used it at times - but I guess it's one of those things like HAT-sniping tanks from choppers. Doable in the game's engine, but a tad iffy with regards to reality.

Why dont you guys continue this arguement in a Heli tactics thread such as This one.

As the author of this thread I suggest locking it since the original question has been answered long ago and it seems to be drifting off topic.

I would definitely find this useful in a transport chopper, not so much an attack chopper though.

I tried using it a bit about an hour ago. Not really helpful. It only pops up after your airspeed is reduced to 0...at least for me it did. Adjusting your helo to keep it in the center line is kind of like trying to stand on a ball. For me using the Artificial Horizon helps WAY more once you get used to it. I can get a "Perfect Hover" pretty quickly now that I've spent some time with the choppers. The perfect hover isn't as hard as you think...once you get it your Helo does not move AT all. I use a mouse-keyboard and once I'm in hover I can go make a sandwich and come back with the helo still intact. Maybe someone is really good at using the circle...I dunno, its not optimal though as you have to wait alittle bit for it to show and your airspeed has to be 0. In combat settings, getting you guys on the ground asap is the biggest issue...no time to wait for the circle and drop in.

LMAO!!! I've actually seen a bunch of that in the last week or so. It's still funny when I see it. I thinks to myself, "poor *******". Hehehe...

HALO drops would also include High Altitude. Helicopters are not capable of high altitude. Nor is PR.

The hover indicator is likely a very real and useful tool for RL chopper pilots. I think it would be a required 'pass/fail' item in a helo training matrix. For troop deployment while still airborne, you don't want troops swinging to and fro while they're sliding down a rope.

Here in PR I do think it can be a useful training tool for helo control. It takes some effort to keep that bubble centered. This could apply to a possible training requirement to be able to fly a non-fixed wing aircraft in PR.

Not true. HALO drops can be done out of Chinooks as far as I know.

HALO/HAHO jumps typically occur between FL250 and FL350 so the aircraft is out of range of surface to air ordinance. The Chinook probably can be used (regarding jumpers) for HALO/HAHO training but it's service ceiling is FL185 so I wouldn't expect it to be used for high altitude ops.

In any case, this is OT for the thread. ;)

Yeah, those DVD boxes get up to quite a speed, and can kill if they land on an enemy soldier.

im not sure if 18,000 ft would qualify for high altitude jumping...
