Dismantling Grappling Hook

Post by hx.bjoffe »

Hi all!
Ok, this has been mentioned in other threads, but there has been no clear feedback on it. As far as ive read, at least.

I find it very UNrealistic (and stupid) that (friendly or enemy) grapplinghooks can be removed only by its Owner.
How hard is it to pick up that grapple and throw it back down, OR cut the rope with ones knife? Smurfs leaving their grapples and your newly aquired base on all four, behind-part set for penetration. Just imagine the dude popping his head over the ledge *cut* guys falls head first breaking his neck.
Any agreance?
Can this be implemented into game? Either everyone can press "G" or whatever to remove it, or you can remove it with the knife alà engy removing mines?
Make me happy, development-men and softcoders.

Viking, i used search. Blame it. :|

Good suggestion.

I have no idea if this is possible, but it sounds like it could be done.

Would be Good, it is frustrating (Especially on Mestia) where you can't cut the Grappling hooks with a Knife

well if u r capable of picking grapples (engi) u can drop urs then pick theres up. but being able to cut it with all kits would be great , maybe a few stabs to cut it

Especially on 7gates as well, if you ask me. i made another post of it in another thread a while back, but didnt get any proper responce.
Good you guys agree with me, you must obviously have a high IQ. 8-) This has been bothering me quite some time.
Also like the "pick up others grapples when you left your own"-idea.
Breakdowntothefix, can we expect changes in .7?
Anyone in favour, say "Aye".

I just had to imagine Seven Gates with a whole british squad climbing up the wall, only to see a grinning chinaman standing up there and cutting it through.

Damn, that would be nice. If it's possible I'd love to see it ingame.

I have a feeling that it won't be possible. Like the idea of kicking live gernades away or picking them up to throw back, however valid they are are not possible. I would guess it is a matter of rules in the code that you can't get around that would casue the problem.

I do like the idea though

Well depends. Guess if they are using the SF-models it may be lots of work making them a-new only to have them destroyable. If not is simply making them knifable like Rallypoints, no?
No, i really cant see why it shouldnt work, making it dissapair from World should be doable somehow just as simple/complex as having them entering World. It is not like we need some fastrope-effects or anything to this trick. This is my own logich though, i know nothing of sofwarecoding.
I still feel it could use a little priority if at all possible.
[DEV]s, can any of you confirm the validity?

Perhaps your right, if the current model has a hit point value that can be changed then it could work. But if there isn't a hit point value to mod then I don't know how you could damage it?

If a player's kit can't support grappling hooks, they can't pick them up. Besides obviously blaming the engine, this is probably to prevent civilians from just giving their grappling hooks to insurgents. Either way, I agree that it ought to be possible to "pick up" any grappling hook - but if your kit can't support it, it just disappears.

well bf2 sort of treats a grapple hook like it is a vehicle (i think :P )

so setting the HP of the grapple to very low so a knife can destroy it, who knows???

good suggestion will investigate more...

Doesnt knife actually do a lot of damage, since you can knife an non-armored enemy with one hit

Well if it is like a vehicle then the damage from impacts of being thrown a few times could destroy it, no?? This is assuming the level is lowered, is there a way to set damage parameters seperate for terrain vs. grapple and knife vs. grapple??

... and does it have to be done by HP neccesarily?
Not possible to aim at the object, [insert something] and the object magically dissapairs, simulating the grapple being loosened/rope pulled up?
Thanks for replying, fuzz. My post possibly bares fruit! :)

@outlawz. "[...]like a vehicle." Tried knifing them? It only does lethal damage on softskinned humans.

In the meantime, just make sure you've got an engineer in your squad, get them to throw their hook onto the ground and then they can pick up the one attached to the wall.

Not perfect but it works.

No, you can pick up any you want, as long as you're not holding one yet. Would be cool to be able to gather more though...

Can we not just have it so every kit has the grappling hook 'ability' and has no ammo for it? I'm sure if a soldier came across one in real life, and it was going to prove of some use at some point, then they'd have it. I mean how much do these things weigh anyway?
