Dirtbike handling fixed!
ok, it took me a few minutes of testing the bf2 editor but i have a dirtbike that leans in theory, only thing thats holding me back at the moment is the fact that i dont know how to shift an objects center of gravity.
Heres how to do it: the dirtbike at present has 6 wheels, 2 that you can see and four invisible stablisers. All you need to do (in the bf2 object editor) is set the strength of the stabliser wheels to around 4 or 5, and the strength of the two visable wheels to around 100 to compensate (or mabe more to fix the annoying damage from terrain that it always receives). the dirtbike will now lean on a corner and right itself but it will lean the wrong way, all that now needs to be done is to shift the centre of gravity to below where the wheels touch the ground. This would create a realistic turning effect but it is also where im stuck, i have no idea how to move the centre of gravity in the editor, i have also read that it may have to be done in 3dsmax but i dont know how. If anyone can help i will go on improving its handling.
My "suggestion" is that we add this system to the existing dirtbike for reality.

i have sort of given up on moving the center of gravity of the vehicle. instead i have decided to add a rudder from an aircraft above it, this will help with lean responsiveness and also the effect will be less at low speeds.
now how do i get the damn thing to work!
ill post a video if it works when im done.

Yeah i can see that now, it uses the centre of the object for every single calculation it does, stupid bf2 engine. Any idea how jet rudders work? im getting some strange handling out of my bike + jet tail rudder
I can now do flatland tricks
Edit:
ok scrapped the center of gravity and rudder ideas, used the two front guide wheels to tip bike by moving them when the bike turns. heres a video
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N1JYR566
Advantages: bike works very well at low/medium speeds, looks more realistic, feels much more like a 2 wheeled vehicle, less damage taken from terrain.
Disadvantages: now harder to climb hills and some stability issues.
if anyone wants the files for my version so they can try it out and refine it ill upload them for yah. ill keep working on this.

Sigh... here you go then

as you can see its not perfect, but it is improving - if very slowly.

just added a camera view or two for the benifit of testing.[R-CON]Desertfox wrote:How are you in third person?
and yeah the handling still needs some work, part of the problem is the fact that it goes so fast, if i slowed it down a bit then it would be much more stable and i could reduce the wheel strenght so it would have less random bouncing. but the whole point of it is that it should be fast, manovarable and weak. but ill keep working at it.
The problem with it sliding about so much is because it goes so fast,im sure there is a way to increase the friction on the wheels, but i havnt found it yet
Edit: This thing is giving me a headache, anyone know how to turn an existing "bundle" into a "rotationalbundle"? or bundle with rotation? If i can do this i can totally fix all the stability issues with the bike.

ok i have finished! dirtbike is pretty much perfect, no more random bouncing
, less damage from terrain and now you can actually control it
+ It now leans like a lean leaning machine.
I have just noticed the community modding section - sry i think this should be in there, my bad. If a moderator could move this post to that section it would be great.
I am in the final process of testing the bike but i need to try out things with the passenger which i cant do on my own. If anyone that has / can create servers and who wants to help it would be much apreciated (and fun for them also
). Add me on xfire: flandan if you want to help.
Ill upload a new video later on.

For the sake of realism i feel i should first ask if any of you have ever ridden a dirt bike then ask what engine it supposedly has, then tell you that a 250 cc dirt bike will be lucky to get up to 50-60 mph at this point that thing is out running normal armored humv's at top speed witch isnt any where near real. the thing goes almost as fast as the little bird does. its insane you need to lower the speed. But other than that your lean system looks 10 times better than whats in the game top notch work man if the community had more people like you this mod would be much better off and a lot more advanced.
Oh yeah and the drifting on a dirt bike. not quite any one whos ridden a bike will tell you that when both wheels loose traction, you meet the ground very very quickly.

Yeah im aware theres still going to be many things wrong with the dirtbike. 1st of all its still a six wheeled vehicle, so things like falling off cant be added and drifting cant be prevented. as for the speed, i know the thing is way too fast atm but i am not convinced that reducing this will go down well as it is one of its only strengths. I think i have made it very nearly as realistic as possible in the bf2 engine but if someone else wants to try a very advanced version that actually has 2 wheels i will help and support them as much as i can.'Berry[13thmeu wrote:;473158']For the sake of realism i feel i should first ask if any of you have ever ridden a dirt bike then ask what engine it supposedly has, then tell you that a 250 cc dirt bike will be lucky to get up to 50-60 mph at this point that thing is out running normal armored humv's at top speed witch isnt any where near real. the thing goes almost as fast as the little bird does. its insane you need to lower the speed. Edit the actual CON and TWEAK files and its a simple case of changing the word from Bundle to RotationalBundle.Flan wrote:Edit: This thing is giving me a headache, anyone know how to turn an existing "bundle" into a "rotationalbundle"? or bundle with rotation?
