Official Project Reality IRC

Post by Gaz »

It is my pleasure to announce the new official Project Reality IRC channel!

#projectreality , on Quakenet!

Everyone's welcome to drop in, say hello, arrange server meet-ups and generally chat :) The channel has been created for the community, so we would be greatful to everyone who wishes to include the channel in their Perform Script!

We hold interviews with Devs, 'pre-release parties' for new PR releases, exclusive teasers to highten the excitment immediatly before releases, and many other ideas!

Please see the post below for a tutorial to help anyone new to IRC. The following is the official channel ruleset.

IRC CHANNEL RULES

We have implimented a set of rules for the IRC channel. The reasoning for this is that the channel has gained popularity, and is classed as an official community medium for us all to interact. Therefore we have a duty to ensure that this channel is a safe online environment to discuss anything while protecting our users.

These rules are a modified version of our forum rules. Therefore if you can follow our forum rules (most are capable :D ) then you will have no problems in the IRC channel!
Section 1: Text Guidelines
  1. Language
All text should be in English only. We don't ask you to be a 'Spelling Bee' champion, or an English Major, only that you post messages that are legible. Users like the fact that they can read messeges posted by others!
  2. Illegal Subjects
Prohibited subjects include, but are not limited to: Warez/pirating, hacking, drugs, pornography, religion, and provoking racism. If we see you posting threads promoting any of these topics you will be warned or banned. Please note that we may add to this list in future, to ensure that subjects and topics that encourage or promote flaming or abuse in any way are kept under control.
  3. Respect
Respect every channel member and moderator. All users are to be treated equally with respect. Repeatedly using vulgar language and flaming somebody is not acceptable behaviour. Respect Channel Moderators, as they are the authority of the channel. Speaking to them with intentional spite will not be tolerated and may result in the loss of your channel privileges. Furthermore, moderators treat everybody as equals and abide by all the rules themselves.

Section 2: Post Content
When posting in an IRC channel, there are several things in which you have to pay attention to. One of the most important things is content. We have a large user base so you must keep in mind that what you say can/will be offensive to other members. To prevent this from occurring unnecessarily, you must abide to our stricter set of rules regarding what you post. All moderators are instructed to ensure that these rules are maintained and will discipline any offenders.

  1. Spamming
Spamming will ultimately get you removed from our channel. This includes continuously inviting people to your website, posting tons of text within a very short time, or just plain out flooding. Project Reality does not allow any advertisement posts in our channel, unless cleared with an 'Operator' (@) or moderator. Any type of "Free Stuff" links will result in a warning and if multiple messeges are posted within a certain time frame you will be banned. If an account is created and used to automatically spam advertisments of any kind, it will be perm banned immediatley.
  2. Swearing
Remember that we have younger members in our community. Overuse of swear words will result in a warning. Further excessive use of adult language will result in further sanctions towards those concerned.
  3. Tolerance
Racist, sexist, homophobic, or religious insults are the quickest way to get you banned from the channel. Feel free to help us keep the cobwebs off our perma-ban button.
  4. Images
No pornographic, overly offensive, or inappropriate images or links to images are allowed. A rule of thumb is if you would not show your boss the image, it shouldn’t be on the channel.
  5. Flame wars
Direct or indirect ‘flaming’ of any forum member to incite or perpetuate a conflict or argument is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate action by a channel moderator. We will not baby-sit users on the channel. We have a mod to make, remember?
  6. Tone
The tone of your text is very important. Always bear this in mind. Everyone has a different outlook, opinion and perception about what a person says and how they say it. It's a good idea not to post if you are angry about another user's views. Calm down and think your reply through.
  7. Channel Tampering
Any attempt to perform any actions not of normal operations of the channel will result in an immediate perma-ban.
Section 3: Moderation
The following is our basic moderator guidelines and standards. Users must be aware of what Moderators are here to do on the Project Reality IRC channel, and what punishments they can expect if they are in breach of the channel rules.

Channel moderators are denoted by an @ sign to the left of their name. For example:
@[R-DEV]Gaz
@e-Gor
@FullForce
user1
user2
etc
These rules apply to moderators too. Any moderator who breaches these guidelines will lose their moderator privileges. There are no double-standards in our channel.

Be aware that all our channel operators log channels and PMs. Any abuse from users will be recorded and held as evidence against you.

  1. Respect All Moderators
The moderators are here to assist members and ensure the smooth running of the channel. It's their job to enforce the rules. If they ban a member temporarily or permanently it will be for a reason. Do not dispute a moderator’s decision or argue with them on IRC. If an action is taken against you that you feel was made in error or unjustified, please notify an Operator (@) VIA THE PR FORUMS PM SYSTEM.
  2. Warnings (and successive courses of action)
Warnings are given by moderators to those who break the rules. We are aware of those who have a “record”. The most common methods of action towards offenders are:

    1. When you break a rule for the first time, a moderator will warn you. Whether you respond to the warning or not, we will assume that you are aware of the situation.
    2. If you continue to break a rule for the second time, a moderator may warn you again for the last time. Depending on the severity of the offense, you may be temporarily/permanently banned for the second offense without warning.
    3. After three offenses, you will be banned. If you post anything we regard as illegal you will be banned upon the first offense.

If you have been banned, it was not without warning or reason. Do not send in emails or Forum PMs requesting to be un-banned. At this point, your requests are falling upon idle ears.
  3. Temporary Bans
Temporary Bans may be issued. Bypassing a temporary ban may result in a more permanent action.
  4. Complaints Against Moderators
If you have a grudge against a particular mod, we suggest that you try to work out your situation via Private IRC chat or Forum PM with him/her. Do not post your problems in any PR public forums.
  5. Harassment
Harassment of staff members via PR Forum PM, IRC public or private text, e-mail, instant messages or other means of contact is a punishable offence, and could result in legal charges should the action/s be serious enough.

Section 4: Project Reality Rights
  1. The Project Reality IRC Channel is a privately operated community channel. "free speech" is not a right in the channel. Our approach has always been, and remains to only intervene in order to ensure the smooth running of the channel or when users breach the above policies. However, there may be occasions where we need to intervene for reasons beyond the scope of the policies listed on this page and we reserve the unconditional right to do so in order to protect ourselves, our users and the goals of the PR Team itself.
  2. The administrators and moderators reserve the right to ban user accounts at their discretion without giving prior warning.
  3. Project Reality reserves the right to alter, edit, or update these rules as they see fit, at any time, according to events or policies that may or may not take place.
  4. Channel moderators have been instructed to, where nesessary, duplicate bans from the channel on the PR Forums, and also visa versa. Therefore a channel ban may be grounds for a forum ban (temp or perm), and a forum ban may warrant a channel ban (temp or perm). This is entirely at the Moderator's disretion.
Thanks,

The Project Reality Team

Guide to mIRC

Post by Gaz »

-Quakenet Tutorial!-

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. There are many servers you can connect to and clients you can use to actually access IRC. The most popular IRC client is mIRC.

Download mIRC: mIRC: Download mIRC
mIRC FAQs: mIRC: Frequently Asked Questions about mIRC - Section 1-5

Bear in mind that there are other irc clients out there (gamers-irc etc etc). When you are setting your mIRC up to connect for the first time, ensure that you are connecting to Quakenet (it doesn't matter what part of Quakenet you join- UK, Swedish, etc are all the same).

Then, you will need to auth with Quakenet (Q):

Link to details on how to Auth with Q: The official website for the QuakeNet IRC network

BEAR IN MIND THAT THERE IS NO POINT IN PROCEEDING ANY FURTHER UNTIL YOU HAVE ALL AUTH'D WITH Q.

Also, you may end up waiting 1 or 2 days for your email that will include your new password. If you are, ensure you check your email's trashcan and spam filter regularly as it could be in there.

TIP: When putting in your password, as described in the email from Quakenet, it is a VERY good idea to join an UNPOPULATED channel, like described below, and paste the msg to Q in there, as there's nothing worse than typing up your new auth details that you waited two days for into a channel with 200 people in it. If this happens, we STRONGLY advise you to scrap this password, and just request another. Otherwise, your future channel will be open to theft. This is VERY not nice at all!

Now type /j #projectreality

You need to auth each time you connect on IRC, so you NEED to place your auth command (it's in your email fom Quakenet) into your Perform list. This Perform is like a cfg file that is very easy to edit/amend and carries out a series of commands on startup automatically. Make sure it's your first line!

Find your Perform script here:

open MIRC > View > Options > (scroll up) Options > Perform

now copy the auth command in your email and paste it into your perform list

Now, hit enter to take a new line on your perform, and type in the /j command, along with #projectreality

/j #projectreality

Now, your Perform list (excluding any extra channels you wish to join as well) should look like this:

/MSG [email protected] AUTH insertusernamehere insertpasswordhere
/j #projectreality
/j #blahblahblah (an example)

and so on.....
