tutorial course/ tips/ popups

Post by pasfreak »

searched...didn't find anything

I'm sure many of you have experienced, or have at least heard about the "PR n00b"

basically, many people come into the game, and generally they enjoy themselves. They take their basic BF2 skillz from vBF2 and translate them to PR. For the most part, it works well.

But we all know about those little "extras" that PR includes, things like

Kit requesting
VOIP/Squading up
Taxi'ing aircraft
Rally points
Flag Caps and Spawn points
Crewman/Pilot Kits and corresponding vehicles.
and anything else you might think of that is not quite so obvious to the beginner.

Over the past few years of PR, things have been said (and done) to help beginners out with getting used to the game, BUT

We have also come a long long way in the development of the game, and therefore, I think we need a little improvement in getting to know the game itself.

Places to include "tips" or helpful "hints" may include

the little ad box on the main menu screen, with either text or an internet hyperlink to the PRM guide, or a link to an online tutorial video video.

In-game help boxes (without voice over, please)

A singleplayer map with an obstacle course and possibly in-game signs for help.

Many of these tips should not be basic things like
"every 5 rounds, a tracer fires", or
"your squad leader may issue orders"

they should more or less be only the least obvious things that are in some cases crucial to the game, but not quite so easy to learn.

Thanks for your input guys, I would love to see something like this implemented into the game

I think this thread is going to get a ton of "read the manual responses" but this seems okay, and helpful, however, an easier option for the devs at least would be like a multiple choice question at the beginning of the installation.
something easy like these

To occupy the Gunners position of the warrior IFV you must:
A) have an engineer kit and be in the same squad as the driver
B) Be a member of the british faction, have a crewman kit, and be in the drivers squad
C) be a member of the british faction, have a crewman kit, be in the drivers squad, and have at least 10 support points
D) have the tank driver kit and be in the drivers squad.

Choose the best answer:
A civilian is slowly approaching a checkpoint in a red car with his radio on. what is the best action to take as far as the team is concerned.
A) let him pass, civilians are not part of the battle
B) open fire, if hes not on your team, he is an enemy
C) tell your squad over VOIP to take cover and seek cover yourself immediately
D) jump on the car and knife him through the sunroof, this simulates arresting him.

The A-10 on kashan is being pursued by a mig and is requesting fire support, you are standing next to an F-16 what do you do?
A) get in the F-16 and take that guy out
B) get a pilot kit, enter the F-16 and take off
C) get a pilot kit, enter the F-16, taxi and take off
D) ask permission over the global channel, if you are allowed to fly get the pilot kit, get in the F-16 taxi and take off.

A squadmate has been incapacitated, you have a medic kit, what do you do?
A) eliminate hostiles, revive your squadmate and regroup with your SL
B) drag your squadmate to cover, revive him, heal him and proceed.
C) scan the area for hostiles, revive your squadmate, heal him, and regroup.
D) eliminate nearby hostiles, revive your squadmate, throw down 2 medical bags, and cover him while he heals.

if you answer incorrectly the manual will open up and will ask you a different question.

Is the rank-limited servers something that 2142 introduced or was it part of BF2 in later patches? If it was ever part of BF2, would it be an option to create a special training map and server where at the end of the 'course' the player would be promoted (details saved similar to the rankings), then any proper servers have a minimum rank to join?

Well if it existed in BF2 it could be possible to have a special map made (highly scripted) to teach the unique parts of PR to first time players before they are able to join proper servers. Kinda like a tutorial level before letting people play the full game.

Forcing people to play on a server that only has noobs won't help them.

which is why i suggested a question for installation, pretty much forcing them to at least open it. and if everyone goes through the guide during installation then there should be no excuse for noobs.

I think the BF2 like system is much more helpful to be honest, learning while playings much easier then memorising a tonne of new information from text. The only problem is how difficult would it be to recreate the voice walk through.

This same idea has been posted by many people (including me), all I've ever heard is "ok idea" and that's pretty much it.
