Crouch Aim

Post by Leo »

If it isn't hardcoded or too much work, is there a way to lower all the player models (as in less than 7 feet high) and then do it so that when you aim, your player model "looks up" about half a foot or so.

This would make it so that you can still hide behind stuff, and then pop up when shooting.

Sure, you can say "just go prone and crouch and prone and crouch" but that looks incredibly stupid, reduces situational awareness, and usually gets you killed.

It just kinda pisses me off when I get killed because my player model is crouched behind a wall with his head and shoulders above cover and gets shot.

I think this is one of those gameplay changes that can completely rework inf combat.

It's a good suggestion but I fear the word "hardcoded" is going to be written somewhere around here.

If I understand this right, all you want changed is the height of the player models? If so, there's nothing hardcoded about that. If we really wanted to, I'm sure we could turn them all into smurfs.

I believe he means such as this.

You are couched behind a rock. And in doing so are safe.

You want to return fire. You'll note when you go into aimed mode. (right click.) The soldier brings his rifle to his shoulder.

He wants it so crouch is a little bit lower down, while aimed mode is slightly higher up. Think like this.

Your hiding behind cover on the balls of your feet. Your only sitting 2 feet high in a ball.

You go to one knee to return fire. Hence gaining a foot because your one leg is extended to the knee. So lets say your now 3 feet tall.

I believe he wants it to do something like that. Aim mode would raise you up slightly to shoot over cover while going back to the hip. (releasing the zoomed mode.) would shrink you down further. I believe that is what he is saying.

So there are 4 positions instead of 3;

Standing
Crouched Aiming
Crouched
Prone

Crouched being lower than currently so you are hidden by cover, and crouched aiming being higher so you can shoot over the same cover. I'd add tho that those only apply when stationary, and the crouched height is the same as now if you're moving, regardless of aiming.

Cheese got it right, except it wouldn't be four stances.

This should not be hardcoded, as when you aim, you have an animation and you go into a different "position", both 1p and 3p. This means that the player models can be shrunk a bit, and then make that when they aim in crouch mode, their back "straightens" out a bit (as in looking over the wall) and they can return fire.

This could also be used in prone mode, since it can symbolize propping up the gun up on your two elbows instead of just by your side.

I guess I'm suggesting a system a but like in Red Orchestra if anyone has ever played that.

EDIT: dances in Zazzo's golden shower.

Someone please tell me that the above is irony.

Like in Medal of Honor Aiborne. When you crouch behind something, while looking down the sights, you can pop up and fire and lean left/right.

Great i dea leo. I was once playing and a guy thought he could crouch behind barrels and not get shot. Only problem-they were RED and his head was above the top. Needs to be fixed. Also i thnk it is hardcoded to have 4 players models like-
Standing
Crouched Aiming
Crouched
Prone
*Gives Leo golden shower*
Dont want to say anything more.

You do realize that they will need to redo all the animations for all the soldiers, right?
It's not just a question of slapping in a new stance and be happily on our merry way.
Unfortunately... Because it's not a bad idea.

So, in a way you might call it "softly hardcoded"

Add in "not having you legs or gun stick out of a wall when you are close so everyone outside can see you" and I will be happy. :-P

the problem is that we don't have enough animators to do the trick.

The idea is great. But there is a question or two. If this can be done technically and if all the work it will need gonna be worth of it.
