Squad leader for the first time. Wow.

Post by Safekeeper »

I get me a nice Officer kit and feel pretty content with the situation when, shock and horror, a guy joins my squad! I give him a defense order and we get down to the North Bunker. Once we're settled in, I decide to be honest with him and tell him I've got little experience with PR, and that if he feels like taking over, that's perfectly fine with me. He says no, and tells me I'm doing just fine. Looks like I'm stuck with my role as an Officer  .

Oh well, I do my best. Over time more people join the squad and I try to communicate with them and the other squad members as good as I can, giving and asking for orders and directing the squad's engineer to build that bunker the Commander is trying to set up at the North Bunker. I get me an Officer kit at the main base and I even, to my amazement, find myself gathering my squad and setting up a rally point!

All in all, despite some disagreement with my squad members who kept requesting new orders when I thought the ones we already had were perfectly fine  , I felt I did a decent job. It was fun as Heck, really, despite the pressure I felt throughout (guess I'm taking this a tad bit too seriously). The only thing I'm really embarrassed of was when I was gathering my squad in a ditch outside the North Bunker to set up a Rallying Point and I grew more and more frustrated that so few people were showing up. I kept scouting over the top of the ditch and checking the mini-map... then I look behind me and find that four of my squad members have indeed shown up and are sitting there looking at me strangely. Overview, Safekeeper :o ops:!

BloodAce, DigitalEpiphany, Babylon, SIK666, and LeO [edit: tell me if I forgot someone :p ], thanks for a good match. It was great to have you.

Nice ;) Good luck being a squad leader :)

Also you do know that you can request your officer kit at a few other locations besides the main base, right? If you don't, read the manual and you will know all about it and be an even more efficient squad leader ;)

cheers

Squad leading is a fine art, It's great fun after you get the hang of it and get the prick out of your squad that just want to join the squad to get the sniper kit and go do their own thing. It's a bit of a hassle, especially when most of your squad and your commander have mics but just keep at it and when your team wins and you see your squad on the Best Squad list it's a great feeling because you know you lead the squad well and helped your team achieve victory. Good Luck!

Yup. But this one time, I didn't have the manual handy, so I couldn't look up what those places were :o ops:.

Sounds like you did a good job m8

Don't worry about the pressure, SLs do have responsibility (I got chewed out by a commander once lol- but he didn't give me CAS cover so I could move...so boohoo to him)

To get more comfortable with being an SL I tended to go for the smaller servers in my own country so that I could get used to the same crowd for a while. (22SAS server is brill)

Well done again, cya on the battlefield

You shouldn't. But don't confuse other squad's rally points with mapper placed rally points. Other squad's RPs have their squad number in the map. If they don't have a number, it's a mapper one.

This is a reality mod right ? You just need to think a little "in RL, where should I be able to find weapons and items ?" So easy !
[R-DEV]OkitaMakoto:"Cheers, you're the man, Okita"
[R-DEV]Rhino:"I in fact got kicked from a server for tking."
Hitperson:"well done, treasure it forever."

[R-DEV]Chuc:"Pro man, pro."
(yes, it was about me)

nice one!! its hard work being an SL espically when u have whiney sqad members who go rambo, i always if i make a squad call it somthing relevant such as armor, pilots, or on a n infantry map eng VOIP usually works well.

i had a good squad on mestia bout an hour ago went okay but we were let down as we had no commander.

thats another thing i have noticed no commander often=lose or **** commander=lose squads need cordination as squads cant talk to each other [without team speak(stupid BF2)]

good work though mate!

Luckily my whole squad behaved well. There was a rambo or two and that engineer never, to my knowledge, made it to that bunker to build it (I left the round prematurely), but it all worked out great, to be honest.

I take it Sandhurst is an OCS?

But anyway, we need more SLs in the field! One of the few times I played as a squadmember, I played with StrikeTeam and the SL at the time knew his shit. A little more experience under your belt man, and you'll be a fine leader. There's that saying that goes something like I would rather have a leader who makes bad choices than a leader who is indecisive.

Good. We need more squad leaders who take the job seriously.

A squad that sticks together and follows orders usually gets a high combined score compared to a squad of, even skilled, rambos.

The most important part of running a squad is communication. Give orders, ask what members' status is, tell people out of position to get back in position. Kick people who do not cooperate.

I want a headset with a mic more and more for every game I play :) . Would be great to have for World in Conflict, too.

That happens. I hate it, because when people use it they don't ask me out right, they just use the commo rose and ask for new orders even though I told them what to do a minute ago. I guess some people just have ADD or something - I tend not to pay attention to those, as you usually can't say who said it anyway.

That was my guess, too. That 'We need new orders' is short for 'Squad Leader, I feel this spot is not under threat of attack and that it would be a better allocation of our resources to move against South Bunker with Squad 1'. Which admittedly takes a while to type up.

And page down is for: No, we are staying here defending this point against hostile counter-attack that is underway right now.
