Supply lines

Post by AfterDune »

I have searched, but found not what I was after. Please erase this thread if it has been suggested before.
---

I kinda came across this old BF2 mod (don't think it was ever finished or even started) which was about supply lines or something. It got me thinking; supply crates are always airdropped, but the enemy can always see them coming from miles away and shoot them with their darned APC's or whatever they use for it.
I'd like to see supplies being brought to the frontlines using the repair truck. The driver (or passenger perhaps) presses the "fire" button and a supply crate spawns. Of course, those crates should be limited, but it would certainly be a bit more realistic.

Imagine the current situation; a squad is pinned down by enemy tanks/apc's, but they somehow manage to hold 'em off with light AT or whatever. They ask for a supply drop and wow, it drops right next to them, without it being shot by the enemy. The squad requests more light AT and -oh-mama- Heavy AT and fire the **** out of the enemy armor.

Now imagine the same situation with no supply drops available. Another squad should attack the armor from another side, having that nice repair truck at their disposal and, after spawning a supply crate, pwning the **** out of the enemy, using -oh-mama- Heavy AT.

Tell me what you think and what I didn't think of... :)

FH has these trucks for ammo boxes, sounds like a good addition for the commander's truck if it's possible.

This is an idea we had for a long time now... choppers and trucks "spitting" out a supply crate or ammo dump.
Read on from there.

Nations at War has this. All it was just the heavy transport vehicle with a supply crate in the back and could only hold 2 people, driver and a gunner. Though, this is different than what you're suggesting, I'd like to see this

Its a good idea of gameplay enhancement.

Here's an impression of what happens after trying to code this... ;)

God I hate that scene...

This would be amazing to implement. I always shoot at them as they fall with my rifle and half the time it just tends to blow up... but maybe an apc hits it and I dont see :)

I'd prefer if we could fast rope supply drops down from black hawks.

Sounds like a good idea.

I can see why you'd want this but I have to disagree. If you cant secure an area and the airspace for the duration of the drop then you dont get supplies past what a rally point gives.

The game is allready too generous with free ammo for all. I like that a force can be denied supplies if not completely in control and I think it relates to the trouble supply lines would encounter.
HAT is imbalanced imo, I hope it is hard to get one on the frontline because its dam lethal

If anything I'd like to see RP have the same problems though I guess they are quite easily destroyed. Bring back that rule where they all get zapped when a flag is lost

Reading your reply it seems like you agree :p . Air drops don't always land, but loads of times they do: easy, very fast and very generous.
If you need to drop off a supply crate using a vehicle, it's so much harder!

No I'd rate the present supply crate as being very weak. The aircraft with its noise, the crate is unmanned, uncontrollable and unrepairable, high visibility for a long time and with low hp it is easier to intercept.

A truck like the ammo truck can go by almost any path it chooses. Its not noisy, fairly sturdy. Its manned so has constant voip and possible backup. Maybe the driver is a SL and is spawned on for repairs, etc and of course they'd have all the ammo and kits needed right there.
It would be like a mobile HQ flag?

Every strength has its weakness, if HAT could only be requested from supply crates I'd be chuffed.
That'd stop people using HAT right at the start of a game on enemy traffic leaving the UCB and discourage various other muppet tactics

Ah, like that.. I see your point now.

HAT only from crates sounds like an idea, but I don't think it's that realistic. Who would go out there in the field and get their goodies on the frontlines instead of taking those with 'em? But that's another thing :) .
