would this work for 128 player server?

Post by zangoo »

so people r always talking about how 64 people for a map like kashan is way to little and that project reality has tried to make a 128 player server but anything above 65 will crash or kick people. but i found this web site and it lets you make a 255 player server. now everyone knows that 255 players would need a super computer to play it but what about really high end servers playing with up to 100 or 128 players?

here is the web site

Also, isn't that for HL2? The website/link name says so anyway.

Finaly, here are the instructions for upping the maxplayer limmit upto 255..

Ok, now since I won't provide you with any exe or patch to have this automated, not that I can't. Is because some may think I wana trick them to download a trojan or keylogger. So instead..

Here are the instructions for the do it your selfers.. ;)

1. Download and install a hex editor program if you don't already have one, I suggest this one http://www.hhdsoftware.com/hexeditor.html as I will be using instructions that are based on it.

2. Create a backup copy of the "Bf2_w32ded.exe" file in the "Battlefield 2 Demo" folder first incase you screw up.

3. Now open up the ""Bf2_w32ded.exe" file with the hex editor and go to offset 0001CECC (by doing edit>goto with the hex editor I suggested), when you find it you should be seeing the value 40, the value 40 in hex translates to 64 in decimal (don't ask me how I found that value being responsible for checking the hard coded limmit ;) ), the maximum hex value we can use now is FF which translates to 255, that means you can max out your server upto that many users!. Ok, after you are done changing the 40 to FF, save the file by doing file>save and close the hex program.

4. Ok we are NOT done yet, here comes the second part. As most of you should already know this tutorial is for dedicated server operators that launch the server through "BF2ServerLauncher.exe" only. If you want to max out the 64 player limmit on cable or dsl connection then I highly doubt you will even be able to handle anything beyond the default values. I recommend using this methd for lan and anything beyond 10mbps connection.

Ok, now go ahead and run the "BF2ServerLauncher.exe" program. Create a new server config profile by clicking on the + button on the bottom, type in "iv81255" for example and press ok. Now set all values as you want for the game except the "MaxPlayers", why? becasue it will not let you go beyond the 64 limmit ;) (for now!). Ok, after you are done, click on save and quit the "BF2ServerLauncher.exe" program.

5. Now browse to your "My Documents" folder and you will discover that their is a folder called "Battlefield 2 Demo" now go inside and find the "ServerConfigs" folder, go inside and find the "iv81255.con" server config profile you created with "BF2ServerLauncher.exe", go ahead and open the "iv81255.con" file in notepad and change the value next to maxplayers to how many players you want to have join in the dedicated server (upto 255, if you set anything beyond that, the server will make it 255). save it and close notepad.

6. Now run the "BF2ServerLauncher.exe" application again, scroll down the dropdown menu box and find the iv81255 profile and select it. you will now see the maxplayer value show up as whatever you specified. DO NOT CHANGE OR CLICK ON IT. If you do, it will reset to max default 64 and you'll have to repeat step 5 all over again.

7. Now finaly, start the server up with the "start" button and BAM! u should see 0/255 or whatever you set it as :P

enjoy!

Has this actually been tested with players before?
Because somebody already managed to get the server showing up as 0/128

I think there was some project trying this a looong way back. As far as I recall, the server kept crashing due to engine limitations :(

I think, they did the exact same thing, but after 64 players no one else could join, I think..

You gotta remember that each connected client requires 4mbs per. That means you'd have to have commercial fiber rated at 600Gbs to be able to support a full 255. I wouldn't push it above 128.

I believe the GameServer host Hypernia is capable of 128 slots with BF2 if you purchase the premium box (~$250/Month)

*sigh* "Battlefield 2 Demo"
Too bad we can't just run this mod off of the demo client and then use the 128 player hack from there xD

Yeah, there are working 128 player servers for the demo, I wonder why DICE took that option out in the full... :/

well if you got your hands on the demo code could you kinda copy and paste it into project reality?(i know it is harder then that) also how much bandwidth is needed for one player to connect to a server?

Hmm, cant say i agree with you there. 4mb/s? last time i checked it takes a little over 4kb/s up to the server and 14kb/s down for each player... correct me if im wrong. As an example, MMOs would not be possible if what you are saying is true. The problem is not realy with the servers IMO but actually with restrictions built into the engine. This is made obvious by the fact that the server is not just laggy as it would be if it was a bandwidth problem but it is actually crashing whenever people try to hack it for over 64 players.

I do agree that 255 players is out of the question, simply because you would need a very, very powerful server (and we all know these dont come cheap). but imo if you can get around the hardcoded aspects of the problem anything would be 'possible'.

I'd have thought that the demo is unmoddable or something. Or DICE has said that messing with the code from it isn't allowed.

I've asked before but didn't get a very clear answer, will DICE not give people permission to mod some of the more integral things that cause alot of "hardcoded" issues? Even if you sent them a really nice polite email asking them?... with some freshly baked muffins.
