Requesting kits
Hi all,
I'm very new to PR so please excuse my ignorance. I've been playing over the last 24 hours and really enjoying it and getting into it, the one thing I'm struggling to get my head around is the kit requesting and what part of 'reality' it plays.
Say, for example, you have an Army sniper, I could reasonably assume he has trained for a certain period of time to be a sniper and that is his class, same goes for soldiers who are trained in AT and suchlike. Why do standard soldiers have to request a AT or sniper kit during the game? It just seems to defeat the object of reality for me, it seems like we are saying you're this class, but if you request a sniper kit you can now be a sniper.
I don't know if anyone agrees but, for the round, I would like to see people selecting kits and that is their class until the map/round changes.
Maybe someone could enlighten me what the idea was in the kit requesting system?
Cheers,

I understand what you are saying, but I think the Devs might be limited by the BF2 engine. I might be wrong, but I don't think there's a way to assign a kit to someone for an entire round.
Also, it would suck for just two people to have all of the cool toys for the whole round. It might be more realistic, but there needs to be a balance between realism and good gameplay. More realism isn't necessarily better. That's why you don't have to sit out for the rest of the round after you die. I think the kit request system is an attempt to find this balance. PR limits these weapons to the numbers yout might actually see if real life, but it still gives everyone the opportunity to grab the support gun and go mow down some fools.

I think that's the point. When you die all that training and background is gone. Very realistically so. Don't try this out IRL.-=x0(GHOST)0x=- wrote: ... More realism isn't necessarily better. That's why you don't have to sit out for the rest of the round after you die. ...
And if you 'respawn', you're quite a different character with different background/training/...
So you can be whatever you wanna be (or can't if the kit is gone).
Of course you might switch several times in mid-play, but think of it as switching the 'character' entirely. There are more than 64 ppl bound to be on a map.

I see what you mean now, obviously I was putting too much emphasis on 'realism', although I would contest the sit out the rest of the round point when you die, I look at re-spawns as reinforcements.
With regards to the limitations of the BF2 engine that's why we ask these questions. In CoD you can limit snipers and AT's to a certain number and once they have all been taken, that's it, I appreciate that would be **** for players with a lesser connection speed, but I was wondering whether there could be a fairer system of limiting and dishing them out, whilst keeping it 'realistic'.

Just my thoughts but..
Since , in RL , squads aren't limited to 6 people , players rotate (die - spawn) emulating a larger squad and/or replacements. The ability to select a kit then makes the squad a bit more flexible and as the kits are limited (ie 2 snipers as mentioned) , this emulates having 2 snipers in your squad.
The skill and who uses the kits then becomes part of the SL's determination (or at least it should be but there are still some "let me be sniper" players hanging around).
You can "train" yourself on the various kits in the SP version. Simply loading a MP map won't always work because some of the kits are allocated depending on the number of players and specifically the number of players in your squad.

Can you imagine 32 players asking you for the sniper kit all game? Just look at all of the kit request messages that run across the top of your screen, and you'll have an idea of how big of a burden that would be. Keep in mind that there are 10 limited kits in PR (Sniper, Marksman, Support, LAT, HAT, Grenadier, AA, Officer, Pilot, and Crewman). If you want people to have permanent roles throughout the round, you would need the commander or SL to assign all of these kits as well. Also, what happens when you get a d-bag commander who thinks it's fun to keep people from getting limited kits? I've run across quite a few of these idiots, and I don't want them to have that kind of power.

Id hate to have it where, some random guy with HAT chose he wants it for whatever reasons, constantly dies and ruins it for our team - as the squad named "anti-armourinf" gets mauled trying to take out tanks with LAT and engineers.
Something thats common with most BF2 mods is "choice" your not forced to do something once you pick it, or forced away from picking a kit someone else has *for an entire round*
I will say you shouldn't be able to get some kits off rallies ( sniper cough! )
and the command approving kits has already been suggested I believe - and it would be ruined by bad players.
I do see where your coming from, but heh I don't have any ideas other than some guy making a macro to request his 1337zor kit in .03 seconds at the start of the round and keeping it all game wasting it!

Because you can't limit kits that way with the BF2 engine. This is the only way to limit kits and have them only available to people at certain areas.
Lockage.
